Artist description
The group is a collection of uniquely forward thinking spirits, motivated by an honest and soulful passion for their craft.“The Eugene Smiles Project is the culmination of an unrelenting passion for a craft, coupled with the drive and raw energy of a steaming locomotive. As the acoustic guitars wage war against the lone electric in a sub-aggressive, ritualistic splendor, the thunderous appeal of the drums and bass keep time, and set the stage for the lyrical weavings of its troubadour.” -Eric “Lobo” Brillinski WCMU Radio Mt. Artist History
The Eugene Smiles Project was born in the northwoods of Michigan, amongst the jack pines and cursing waters of the mighty Lake Huron. Since their conception some three years ago, the band has been working hard tweaking its sound, and as a result have created a genuinely unique genre that can be best described as “aggressive acoustic.” The “aggressiveness” in the music of The Eugene Smiles Project comes from the contentious guitar stylings of singer/songwriter, Steve Eller. When transposed against the smooth, subtle electric/acoustic work of lead player Steve Rea, and the heavy handed drumming of Matt Halleck one can’t help but be mystified by the sound that is created. Oh…and the bass player ain’t bad either |
