Artist History
For years, the name Alan Smithee has been associated with some of the worst movies ever made. Created as a pseudonym by the Directors Guild of America for when a director or writer removes his or her name from a bad movie, the name Alan Smithee has been credited on such memorable fare as "HellRaiser: Bloodline" and "The Tony Blair Witch Project."
However, the negative connotation of the name Alan Smithee is about to change with the arrival of Alan Smithee, the band. Formed in the Winter of 2002 by David Jonelis, Matt Nelson, Jon Allen, Paul Brantley, and Ryan Puckhaber, Alan Smithee is quickly earning a reputation as one of the most talented bands to come out of Los Angeles in a long time.
Alan Smithee came together as a group when keyboardist and UCLA student Jon Allen contacted singer-songwriter and fellow UCLA student David Jonelis with the prospect of starting a band. Jonelis, who had been trying unsuccessfully for the past year to put together a band, was excited by the prospect, and an initial jam session took place with Jonelis and Allen. It was at this jam session that the initial foundation of Alan Smithee was laid. Jonelis was already a respected singer/songwriter in Los Angeles at the time. Among his several accomplishments including a feature in HITS Magazine Buzzing Top 20 list naming him as one of the top 20 unsigned artists in the nation, Jonelis has appeared on Star Search and most recently made an appearance on MTV’s show “Girl Makes Band” in which the band took top honors. With the addition of Ryan Puckhaber on the drums, Matt Nelson on lead guitar, and Paul Brantley on the bass, the band began an intense period of rehearsals during which they crafted their unique sound.
The band continues to play shows on the west coast and has recently joined forces with LA’s Martin Erlichman and Associates. This highly respected firm is best known as being the driving force and founders of Barbara Streisand. The band has also been awarded top band honors at the 2003 UCLA Battle of the Bands.
With its combination of melodic piano, hard driving guitar, and radio friendly hooks, Alan Smithee is poised to take the music world by storm. No longer will the name Alan Smithee be associated with bad movies. Rather, the name will now be synonymous with great rock music, a uniquely fresh sound, and catchy songs that stick in the listener’s head long after the music has stopped.
