Artist History
The vision of Once Upon Nowhere came together in the month of March, year: 2003, at Open Mic Night at Nipissing University. Mike, Collin, and Rob played an acoustic set in which they played a number of songs from Dashboard Confessional and The Get Up Kids. Andrew also played a set in which he performed three of his own songs and one Dashboard. All being friends, after the set they agreed that they should definitely harness their talent and start up a band.
The next monumental step in the band came a few weeks later when Andrew brought over an acoustic guitar and jammed with Rob and Collin to a song he wrote. Both of them were impressed by the potential of the song and soon taught Mike the lyrics. "It was really an acoustic, Get Up Kids style sound at first", Rob the guitar player described. However, that style was soon revamped with two electric guitars, drums, bass, and a crazy singer. And there it was, Mike vocals, Andrew guitar, Rob guitar, Tom bass, and Collin on Drums. With only a few practices in a period of less than a week, Once Upon Nowhere already had three original songs and had the stage presence and sound of a band that had been playing together for years.
The Music
"Melodic Emo" Mike Jaffray the singer insists. It's not soft emo, and it's not hardcore, but it's somewhere in between. There's a lot of rocking clean guitar, some distortion, some screaming, lots of singing, and mostly fast drums. "You will definitely not get bored with our songs, they take you on a journey of highs and lows but come out with a positive and inspiring message" Andrew Primmer guitarist and main lyricist says. The lyrics are something that is important to Once Upon Nowhere. They don't want to have a negative influence on the people they come in contact with but rather the opposite. They want to get the listener to realize the choices they CAN make and the potential that is inside everyone of them. Basically, the band is sick of hearing bands get you depressed and wants to do something about it.
The Name
The name "Once Upon Nowhere" describes the truly unrealistic expectations that culture has put on us. Issues such as success, money, beauty and sex are things that the media distorts. Too many people grow up thinking they have to live up too these ideals to be accepted by others and find personal happiness. The truth is that nobody can live up to these things that media has thrown at us, hence the name, Once Upon Nowhere.
