THEUDHO :: Dies Natalis Solis Invicti :: Avondland Productions review by Wouter Roemers
When in the 4th century A.D. (anno domini) the Church Fathers set the date of Christ's birth they choice a time when the populace was accustomed to celebrating, the time of the Winter Solstice, in Rome the festival season was called Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, the birth of the unconquered sun -- after the Longest Night the become longer until the Summer Solstice and the Longest Day... Thus far goes the explanation for the title of the first recording of one-man Viking/folk black metal band Theudho. In between a truly enchanting prologue ('From the Primeval Depths') and epilogue ('When Nidhögg rises Again ') four tracks of ravishing, well-produced black metal with a great sense of epic feeling are delivered. Lyricwise Theudho delves into ancient mythological subjects, as tackled by such bands as early Enslaved or Absu. The cover artwork displays a Roman warrior/peasant-like specter (or white marble statue) lifted in a fiery sky while dark clouds gather and murky mountains drown in the spreading unfathomable obscurity. Each and every track has been very well constructed and never induces any moment of boredom. The vocal work of J.S. is as diverse as the music itself: one moment peaceful, the other time epic and brutal - the use of narrative, whispering and grunting/shrieking vocals add to the diversity of this one-man band which makes it all the more impressive. One of the best debuts to come from the Belgian underground in recent months! |
