Press Reviews
Album review in Rip It Up Magazine, Issue 713, February 2003:
RED STAR 11
Charlie Chaplin (C-Acre Recordings)
Just over two years ago while trying his luck in the UK, Australian guitarist Nick Penfold formed Red Star 11 with fellow guitarist and songwriter David Vandermeersch, formerly of Belgian act Sorgho. Joined by Brits Robert Lane and Dee on bass and drums, Red Star 11 has slowly built up a live following that has culminated in the recording of this debut set.
Put down in Nick's North London bedroom, the quality of the sound is remarkably high, with none of the pops and ticks that sometimes weaken such DIY releases. The title track is a heartfelt rollick through Jeff Buckley's songwriting neighbourhood and the muffled guitar harmonics of All These Days keeps the album flowing at a steady pace. In Motion slows things down with a low-key and sparing accompaniment, save for the effective gurgle of a guitar effects pedal. The passioned call to a lost love on Josephine recalls the work of Counting Crows or The Dave Matthews Band, with vocals stretching from smoky recollection to yelping pleas. This state of longing is matched by subsequent track Interstellar, on which Penfold sings of a lost desire while backed by a plaintive musical score. Paris offers something different with a French lyric and the introspective verses combined with chiming guitars on Breakaway also bolster the allure of this debut. The democratic indexing of tracks, which sees Vandermeersch and Penfold alternating writing credits for each consecutive song, works well for the most part.
Red Star 11 offer a credible introduction to their songwriting skills with this debut; a studio review of this home recording would no doubt reinforce such commendation.
