    Artist History
John Stanek was born with the gift of music. At age four, he was already performing Frank Sinatra show tunes for his family and by the time he was in first grade, he began writing stories and songs. But it didn't stop there! At the age of 16, John bought his first guitar - determined to be the next Jimi Hendrix. Several years and two dozen music styles later, John found his own voice and began writing melodic songs with a positive message. In August of 2001, John released his debut album "Unconditional" which led to a large Borders Bookstore tour the following year. He has also performed at a wide variety of venues in the Atlanta area ranging from Smith's Olde Bar to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Most recently, John has assembled a rocking 3-piece band. With the band, he has just released his sophomore album "HOPE" which has been compared to a cross between the acoustic balladry of Cat Stevens and the anthemic rock of U2. Either way, Hope is an album that should not be missed as it truly lives up to its name, offering smart soulful lyrics that will bring a smile to the face of all music lovers.

Hope Artist: John Stanek Label: Independent Length: 10 Tracks/38:30 In the media rich society we live in it's nice to be able to sit back and listen to independent music once in awhile. This is music we don't know by heart. It is music that isn't produced to be a sound byte to the latest popular flashy image. Occasionally, it is even good. John Stanek has put together a collection of ten songs entitled simply Hope. This album is one of the best independent recordings I've heard in a long time. While this album certainly won't win any awards and will probably go unnoticed by the masses, it is a moving piece of work. Aptly titled, if I had to summarize the album with one word it would be "hope." Themes of the fallen nature of man and redemption through Christ are clear and present across all ten tracks. Reminiscent of Chris Taylor, Staneck has written passionate lyrics and has crafted some excellent music to accompany them. I could complain about the vocals, which could use some work, but we forgive Bob Dylan for not having the best voice in the music business. While Staneck is certainly not Dylan, he has made a very good album that has more heart and soul than most mainstream recordings. Let's hope we get to hear more in the future. 4 out of 5 stars Darryl A. Armstrong 03/20/03 www.phantomtollbooth.org
