Something like a BANDBIOGRAPHY
Good things first: since I do really hate bandbio´s, especially writing them, I am pleased to tell you, that I can keep this one quite short, for that The Zero Three are only around for couple of months. That is since summer of 2002 to be precise.
The Zero Three, as the name already indicates, is a typical postpunk threepiece. If asked, I always compare their music to bands like Jawbreaker, Lifetime or Dillinger 4, with a healthy shot of modern pop punk to it.
So, let´s begin talking about the 3 morons for a while: Although Dave, singing and playing guitar, believes himself to be some kind of center of the universe, even he has to admitt, that Chris is the better singer. And while Dave does most of the songwriting and has by far the cooler haircut, their music would not be what it is, if it weren´t for Chris´ high-pitched backup vocals. Apart from that, Dave is still the better guitar player, which is then again no big deal, since Chris is actually the drummer. Or „just“ the drummer, as Dennis would probably put it. Completing the threepiece, Dennis´ basslines are absolutely neccessary to support and structure the songs of The 03. Well, Chris and Dave even tried to get him to sing a couple of times, but the chicken that he is, Dennis won´t try so far. Knowing about Dennis´ passion for impressing girls by tricking them into taking him for the soft and emo kind of man, the 2 still haven´t given up hope, yet. Well, we´ll see about that in the future!
A couple of lines ago, i said The 03 to be a typical postpunk band. Actually, that´s probably not completely true. The 03 definately do see themselves as a punk rock band! But, coming from the usual HC/punk background, they grew up to find(ing) the musical limitations that most „pure“ punk bands commit themselves to, kind of disturbing. If they wanted to add some more chords to the traditional c-f-g pattern, then why not just do so? But listening to what is commonly known as „emo“ for the next couple of years, they sort of grew tired of the whiney, self-centered attitude and music of this genre´s offspring as well. And that, naturally, shaped the music of The 03: The attempt to combine the anger, energy and snotty attitude of punk rock with the emotive, passionate emo/indie approach.
Dan Yemin, guitarplayer and songwriter of the almighty Lifetime, with his band maybe one of the key influences of The 03, once said that Lifetime tried, unlike most other HC/emo bands at that time, to cover the whole spectrum of human emotion, be it anger, hatred, sadness, joy, love or melancholy, all together, not as seperate parts. To sum it up, that´s what The 03 tries to reach as well. Combined with a positive message of never giving up and getting the best out of life in this world, in their personal and political lyrics, they set out to put the „punk“ back in rock and the „core“ back in emo. And maybe to have as much fun as possible, kiss as many girls as possible and save the world as many times as possible. In no particular order, that is...
