Another Direction - After The Fire
Reviewed: 29th May 2003
When Leicester's Another Direction came to my attention last year I will be honest and say that although they had a few moments where they were genuinely impressive, on the whole their first record was a disappointing affair. Realising this the band have worked hard to come up with a seven track effort which is far better than the original. It twists, turns, batters and bruises in equal measure, putting a British slant on their obvious technically able influences.
'After The Fire' is by no means a masterpiece - it's rough around the edges and mixes so many styles up it seems original yet familiar at the same time. But what it does is offer another glimpse that the boys could well carve open a future, especially if reviews of their recent live performaces are anything to go by. There's certainly a dose of Thrice in there, but with InMe-esque vocals and more traditional pop-punk melodies there really is a bit of something for everyone.
After the atmospheric introduction of 'Drowning', 'Drag You Down' kicks and screams through a blood-splattered verse and chorus, coming across like the softer parts of Poison The Well covered by InMe - typically it's the unique vocals that carve out these comparisons to the Essex trio, not any cliched pap-rock. The EP's title track is cemented with some solid drumming and inventive guitar work, which uses effects nicely and isn't based round the usual solid, yet uninspiring, guitar riff that many bands in the genre attempt to re-hash, song after song. 'Fallen Beauty' is a little too slow to begin with, making it one of the record's weaker tracks, and when the screams do kick in they don't quite have the required effect, making it a song which will probably sound better in a live environment. 'Torn Apart' is another track that just stands out above the average, until the ghost-like female vocals at the track's conclusion kick in, creating a hauntingly beautiful ending.
Another Direction aren't by any means the finished article, but there's certainly something here to hold on to and work at. Like the proverbial rough diamond, 'After The Fire' has plenty of components which work rather well. Smooth out those rougher edges and we may find that the Poison The Well's of this world have a UK counterpart to look over their shoulders at.
