    Artist History
After the demise of the legendary thrash metal pioneers Exhorder, vocalist Kyle Thomas and brother Kevin Thomas began construction on a new band based upon their earliest influences blended with their everyday experiences. The band was called Penalty and quickly became a hot topic for labels due to the success Kyle had with Exhorder. A deal was imminent before a lineup had been completed! Guitarist Steven Fisher and drummer Neil Montgomery rounded out the final makeup of the band, and intense writing and performing was under way. After much debate, Kyle returned to Roadrunner Records with his newest counterparts and recorded the album. Due to trademark infringement, the band was forced by Roadrunner to change their name rather than fight to keep Penalty, so Floodgate was agreed upon and the album entitled "Penalty". Unfortunately the album was released nearly a year after it was recorded. After a lot of pre-release hype, Roadrunner failed to advertise this album in the U.S., and with the original buzz killed by a name change, it had little success in the States. However, after lthe band landed support in Europe for Sepultura on its own and actual advertising by the label in Europe, things were very much on the way overseas. Although the booking agency wanted Floodgate back to support Tool and Korn, Roadrunner pulled all tour support and forced Floodgate to tour the U.S. on its own. Within a year they two parted ways, and Floodgate eventually became a localized product again. After Neil Montgomery left to pursue a college degree, John Cripple filled the drum slot for a few years, and after his departure in 2002 Chris Nail of Exhorder became the final drummer of Floodgate for the occasional shows in the Greater New Orleans area.
