self-titled CD EP --
(Break Up! Records)
(REVIEW BY MARK HUGHSON - New Zoo Review)
Move over, Mooney Suzuki. Here comes something meatier! I cut my teeth on an earlier wave of rock and roll saviors, so when the lead off track, ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE started vibrating the paint off my bedroom walls, I thought, "Cool, it sounds like the Hellacopters." I think that's a fitting description (except this band is from the good ol' USA and not good ol' Sweden or something like that), but the Favors most likely favor the raw power of the Stooges and the kick ass jams of the MC5. Even when the tempo slows down, the hooks carry most of the weight, and thus the band is able to stride through both flat-out rockers and Media Whore-like punky poppers.
Billy Joel really must have been on to something…there are lots of different kinds of rock and roll. But whether it comes from the garage (hello, Hives) or the arena (howdy Cheap Trick), you’ve still really only have two choices:
1. Heinously wanky, posture filled blah-rock
2. Stripped down but full sounding, no bullshit, go all out every time ROCK.
This band has opted for option 2. It's a solid, authentic piece of real rock'n'roll. It's been said before, and I apologize if this is one time too many, but my only complaint is that I only get to hear 5 songs! You can tell with this sampling that the band is not some off shoot side project (although the term super-group would be accurate) with a one hit wonder or some crappy over-used shtick. They are most likely here to attack you non-stop with every conceivable idea about what it is to really rock out in 2003. Do yourself a Favor and acquire this release immediately! --Mark Hughson
The Favors
self-titled CD EP
(Break Up! Records) --
If you worship Hanoi Rocks, dig Buckcherry, appreciate the musical genius of Faster Pussycat, or own a copy of the Jesse Camp & The 8th Street Kidz CD, you're likely to "get" The Favors. The band's new five-song CD blasts off with the Guns N' Roses-meets Dead Boys rawk power of early D Generation but winds up showing off a nifty pop sensibility that's apparent in hooky tunes like "She’s Insane" and "Leave L.A.". And it's the latter quality that ultimately distinguishes The Favors from the rest of today's ass-kicking, power riffing, cucumber-in-the-pants-stuffing neo-hard rock outfits. Sure, the testosterone and volume dials are cranked to the max, and musically this band kicks up a storm as wild, raucous, and bad-ass as anything heard on the Sunset Strip circa 1985. But like their West Coast counterparts Romeo’s Dead, this Columbus quartet backs up its hellfire blitzkrieg with a Cheap Tricky melodic touch that would make Enuff Z'nuff envious.
And when these fellas wanna rock, they fucking ROCK! “One Foot In The Grave” is the kind of timeless rock anthem you rarely hear any more. With its bone-jarring riffs, head-bobbing backbeat, full-on sleazy vocals, thunderous drum action, and screaming lead guitar lines a la "Breaking The Law", it sounds like the sort of tune you and your degenerate buddies would be cranking full-blast in the car at 2:00 AM, while you were parked in front of the mini-mart---shirtless, fucked-up, and guzzling wine coolers like there was no tomorrow. Rock n' roll, dude!!!
All in all, this CD is certifiably killer. I dare you motherfuckers to tell me that "She's Insane" isn't the greatest rock n’ roll song of 2003. I DARE ya! - Josh Rutledge
