Artist History
Narcissist began as a way for me to collect my various musical thoughts and focus them into a single entity. Though things started in a more melodic death metal direction, lately the music has taken a turn towards doom, as I fell back in love with all the old bands that used to give me chills: My Dying Bride ["Turn Loose the Swans"], Anathema ["Serenades"], Paradise Lost ["Icon"] and saw the connections between them and the new crop of grand, depressing bands like Primordial and Hollenthon. There are two 'new' ideas being added to established formulas. First, the lyrical nature of the band abandons the traditional romantic slant of the genre in favor of socio-political themes. Secondly, instead of utilizing keyboards and 'vast choirs' to build atmosphere, Narcissist incorporates a string quartet, adding an intimate and immediate quality to the compositions. The first demo, "The Miseries Never Cease" is rapidly nearing completion, and once a suitable vocalist is found, we'll press a few copies and start making the rounds with press and labels. |
