Artist description
Not too long ago, Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony opened the door for Latin music and in the process became household names. Their success and popularity broadened the minds of American consumers who have since directed much-deserved attention to numerous other international artists. Now that the Latin music craze has subsided, the increasing popularity of Asian actors, producers and writers (bolstered by a 1.5 billion-person Chinese-speaking consumer market) seems to signal another "new" culture's artists on the American music horizon who are now beginning to attract new fans and long-overdue critical praise...and among them, leading the way, is Johnny Hi-Fi.
Born in Taipei, Taiwan, brother to Asian pop star Kevin Hsu, Johnny Hi-Fi moved to America while still in his teens. He then relocated to Austin, Texas where he developed as both a songwriter and performer in the "Live Music Capital of the World", dubbed by the Austin Music Network as an "impeccably dressed walking fashion statement."
Late in 1999 he left Texas for New York City, a location better suited for his unique blend of "Asian Brit-pop." Upon his arrival in New York "Passive Killer" was licensed by Rock Music (Taiwan) and recorded by Chinese pop star Richie Zen, representing Johnny Hi-Fi's first musical exposure in his hometown.
Over 350 performances coast to coast, appearing on national PBS program, Texas Music Café, and producing 3 "Track of the Day" on GarageBand.com, Johnny Hi-Fi is now an acclaimed solitary writer, producer and performer; his solo exploits receiving the long-awaited attention they deserve.
