With a devoted passion for all genres of music and a keen interest to work with all music professionals, amateurs and enthusiasts, John is into music composition of every variety. From Pop to Rock, from R&B to Rap, from Folk to Punk, with Chinese hip-pop mixed in with classical music, John’s compositions are never the same. The word multi-dimensional comes into mind as John is always attempting originality and trying new forms. That’s perhaps what makes John Cai such a one-of-a-kind composer.

Musical Influences Life

Artist History Born in Shanghai, China, John made his first public piano performance at an age of 6 in a concert hall of a local high school. At that time, his father has already left China to New York in pursuit of higher education. Although accepted by the Manhattan School of Music with a Scholarship, John and his mother were unfortunately rejected by the US immigration office. Starting out as a classical pianist, John’s passion for music was rooted here. At an age of 11, John’s family reunited in Toronto, Canada after 8 years of separation. He continued his classical piano training, performing in numerous music concerts and achieving triumphant results in various music contests such as the Kwanis Music Festival, the Canadian Music Competition and the Lyons Music Competition. After passing Royal Conservatory of Music’s final piano exam (ARCT) with first class honour, John began to realize his true calling in life – Music Composing. With the 1st song he ever written, “The New Philosophy Maker”, John won his first music composition award in the 1997 Unique/PolyGram music contest. Gaining confidence for his song-writing skills, John began writing music and lyrics whenever he felt inspired with ideas for great songs. One after another, his songs were submitted to compete in local composition competitions, and his talent was not overlooked as he won numerous awards in the past 5 years. In May of 2002, John graduated with Distinction from University of Toronto and obtained his BBA diploma. Although John is currently working fulltime and teaching piano during weekends, he just couldn’t let go of his tremendous musical inspiration. Amidst his hectic schedule, John decides to put forth his own life savings towards the production of his 1st independent debut album -- “Heart to Heart” is a collection of 7 songs composed by John and performed by various up-and-coming artists.
