Building An Ironman the debut CD constructed by the Joe Miller Band. Writing his own material and pouring his creativity into the project, Joe Miller has created a 24-carat blend of raw talent and dedicated musical passion that he has cast into a unique and insightful alternative rock album. The results speak for themselves. The foundation was laid a few years ago while Miller was on-stage during an open-mic jam at a Dallas, Texas nightclub, singing the emotional pain and triumph of a lifetime’s worth of experiences. Transfixed by what he heard, a DJ from public radio station KNON recruited Miller for a segment featuring up and coming songwriters. Since the segment’s airing, Joe Miller has stayed busy writing songs, refining those songs in the studio, and working in the Dallas music scene with his band. Joe’s voice can only be described as original and smoky-smooth. His vocal coach is Linda Septien who also coaches such artists as Jessica Simpson, Destiny’s Child, and 98 Degrees. Curtis Randall, tour manager and bass player for LeAnn Rimes, produced the CD; which features the talents of Milo Deering and Dan Wojciechowski. The first single “Alive” rocks you like a blitzkrieg, the soulful “Deep Water” relaxes you. The brilliant “Brand New Day” lifts you up and makes you think, while “Daddy’s Girl” reminds you what it is all about.

JOE MILLER BAND: Ready to Conquer Buddy Magazine - Feb 03 by James Anderson Joe Miller knows what it takes to make it in fact he knows too well how hard it is to go from local musician to national recording act. Despite Kelly Clarkson’s Cinderella bypass of the highway to music success on American Idol, for Dallas musicians the road to national success remains a hard and elusive one. But don’t tell Joe that he’s not interested. He knows it takes an Ironman. So Joe has been paying his dues on the Dallas scene. For the past two years he has been playing the deep ellum clubs moving his way up the ladder of the crowded radio scene. Recent Texas success stories such as Bowling for Soup, Evamore, South FM, Flickerstick. Zac Maloy and up and coming bands like Red Tape Poetry and Shackleford Brown (many are friends of Joe’s) only spur him on to work harder to be the next success story out of the Dallas music scene. Again don’t bother telling him how hard it will be or that the odds are against him, he’s not hearing it. Musicians are dreamers after all. Instead he's busy at work doing whatever it takes. And Joe does have many things working for him. His greatest asset, aside from being a great musician, is he his natural people skills. The first thing that strikes you when you meet him is how good he is with people. He has this James Dean bad boy quality and a mischievous grin but he will quickly set you at ease and gains your trust. Joe makes friends easily and inspires people to reach their own dreams. He is a team player and the Dallas music scene is his team. He can work a room like a seasoned politician but there’s nothing fake about him. He regularly helps out other area musicians by getting them secure gigs, helping with promotion and adding links to their websites on his. Joe also provides free guitars for other bands to give away at his show, a benefit of his sponsorship deal he had with Mars Music. In the making of his debut cd “Building an Ironman” Joe has gained quite an education. Joe originally hired Curtis Randall to play bass on the studio. Curtis is Le Ann Rimes bass player/Tour manager/music director. Curtis liked what he heard decided to help out. He says of Joe: “The first time I heard Joe’s music I knew that he had something special”. But Curtis had to be honest with Joe and where he was at the time in light of his dreams. After hearing the dreaded words “you’re not ready” Joe embarked on a five-year process of recording and rerecording and honing his musical skills to get the music right. Having gone through it all he emerges with a high quality cd and as a skilled songwriter having learned how to edit songs down to the essentials and what makes them radio friendly. Having done so he is an astute guide to other songwriters; if he wasn’t so busy “Building an Ironman”, he would hold monthly songwriting clinics. Joe comments, “a lot of musicians needlessly repeat themselves at the end of the song” This is instantly apparent at the open mikes. He was also told to get vocal lessons so he did. His vocal coach is Linda Septien of Septien Vocal Studios. Linda has coached many famous clients including Jessica Simpson. Linda says of Joe’s voice: “Joe has one of the most balsy voices that I have ever heard in our studio. His raw rock voice produces unpredictable interpretive vocals that create a story to cling to.” Indeed Joe has a smoky smooth powerful voice. He distances himself from the crowd in this respect that he’s not another Eddie Vedder clone. He writes lyrically powerful in a style that fits nicely with the current play list on "the edge" 102.1. His cd “Building an Ironman” feels like a concept album with the overall theme being how each hardship in life makes you stronger, tougher. Every trial defines our character. From overcoming much adversity comes growth and development, which leads to eventual success. Not your typical rock message but Joe is not your typical musician. It has an unexpected cohesiveness not often found on a debut cd. Joe writes deep from the heart. He writes honestly about both the pain and joy of love. The first single “ALIVE” is life affirming. A music video for ALIVE is in production being overseen by an Emmy award winner, Jeff Hayes, who cut his teeth on such projects as the Wishbone and Ford Commercials. Joe has made a connection with Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, who will play the video on his new venture HD NET, and reach hundreds of thousands of viewers. On first listen to the cd it would seem that he has suffered much heartache. Songs like DEEP WATER, LONELY TONIGHT, RISE AGAIN, and BRAND NEW DAY are lyrically powerful. “And the morning brings a BRAND NEW DAY But I don’t see it somehow I can’t help it when I get this way Twisting inside out” On the evocative DON’T LET ME DOWN he sings: I’ve been sleepin under bridges I’ve been livin in the past” DEEP WATER: In the end should we pretend? that this love was nothing true or will I find and I damn this life of mine and my heart has gone with you Powerful stuff But Joe’s outlook is defiantly more upbeat than mister Sheik and the current crop of Prozac Rockers heard moaning on mainstream radio. The overall feel of Building An Ironman remains positive and the message seems to be, “life is full of hard knocks but if you persevere you will come through it and be better for the experience.” TALK TO ME is an energetic lively song, which features great acoustic work, as do all of Joe’s songs. The acoustic guitar is an integral part of his sound. Even on WHAT IT TAKES, which starts out as a commentary of life's hardship, the song comes around to the positive chorus. The lyric sums up Joe Miller in a nutshell. Not only has he become an Ironman in pursuit of his own dreams he wants you to arrive at your own as well. The cd has ballads, midtempo and upbeat rockers, Like DADDY’S GIRL dedicated to Joe’s daughter. In the days of the Beatles you could wait to be "discovered" and then producers, promoters, all kinds of industry help was brought in allowing the artist to show up and just play music. Today's musician is a different breed not by choice but necessity. Joe has had to be his own producer, engineer, arranger street team, booking agent, concert promoter, web host, advertising agent, in addition to bandleader. Joe's cd went through so many revisions to get a quality sound that he ended up becoming a studio owner. Joe owns Millennium Sound located in North Dallas at TI Blvd off Rte.75. Fully outfitted with the latest PRO TOOLS software and what he terms "world class preamps" which are essential to making a professional sounding product. On "Building an Ironman" in addition to Curtis Randall who plays bass and produced the cd. Joe has several professional musicians on the disc. Well-respected Andy Timmons plays electric guitar. Dan Wojciechoski who has played on the Backstreet Boys millennium cd and the Good Will Hunting soundtrack handles the drumming. Acoustic guitar legend Milo Deering is also featured. The reason for the pros is, Joe wanted to make a serious product to market his music, the current Joe Miller Band members weren’t around at the time but now are a solid unit ready to tour in support of the cd. Joe supplies acoustic guitar and Vocals, his band includes Scott Weltner on Drums Rick Nelson on bass and Scott Stine on guitar, all excellent musicians and teachers in their own right. The band is more than up to the challenge of reproducing the cd live and a Joe Miller show is something not to be missed. Joe and the band gig regularly in Dallas often at the Curtain Club, which boasts one of the best sound systems in Dallas. The group is now poised with the soon to be released cd for touring and bigger and better things. Led by a solid Ironman the smart money is with them because Joe Miller's got what it takes. http://www.joemillermusic.com
