Artist description
Blofeld was formed at the dawn of the new millenium.
In a world of unrest and musical confusion, Axe Blackwell woke up one morning with a single thought running through his mind: "I'm gonna take rock and roll back to it's roots!"
He got on the phone to T. J. Cobra, his brother in arms, and told him 'bout his new project: Blofeld was a fact...
”Me. and Axe first got toghether back in the early nineties in the heavy metal band "Barclay Bad Boys," a coalization between Axe's garage-rock band Rockwool, and some heavy metal project I had running at the time; P.H. & his slobs (don’t ask me were that name came from)," Cobra says
“I believe it was T.J. who first thought of the name Blofeld...
We were playing some James Bond shoot-em-up multiplayer game when he went “Hey! Why don’t we name the band from the toughest movie-villain ever?”
Being fresh out of ideas myself, I accepted the proposition without much hesitation…,” Axe comments.
He continues: “Winny, now there’s a different story... Originally T. J. was gonna do the drums as well as the bass on the Rocktopussy album, but as time went by and the day of recording approached, I received a phone call from yet another early-stage bandmate; the vocalist from GNURK, a Purple/Maiden cover-band, tellin’ me he wanted to join my new project.
That was Winny, or Gary Barclay as he called himself back then..."
"Actually I gave him the new last name because of his haircut,” Cobra laughs |

Artist History
Blofeld is an interesting project. The main man behind it, Kyrre Stegane (Axe Blackwell), had known the Solheim brothers since the mid-80's, through the brother's cousin, yvind Solheim, whom he had been friends with all his life.
It wasn't until the Solheim brothers' Metal campaign, started around 1996, that they thought about working with their drummer-cousin and his friend. So they formed the Deep Purple tribute band together, the band called Gnurk.
That band didn't last very long, but it was a start of a long and healthy working relationship between Stegane and the Solheim brothers. A couple of years later, Stegane, yvind Solheim and TJ Solheim formed a humorous Metal tribute to Geir Solheim, who went under the name of Gary Barclay at the time, so they called the band Barclay Bad Boys. It also included the keyboard and vocal talent of the magnificent Motorola, who is still highly respected and loved by everybody.
During this time, TJ Solheim and Kyrre Stegane started writing songs together, and it was a classic "Hey, you can write pretty good songs too!" situation, and they discovered that they shared a love for rock 'n' roll, Metal and older music and styles. So it was very easy and natural for them to work together, and they wrote many classic songs together. The lyrics to the infamous "Barclay Bad Boys" song was written by yvind and TJ Solheim, who were absolutely talentless as lyric writers, and people still speculate if it might have been the absolutely worst lyrics ever written. However, the song, written by TJ Solheim and Axe, was very good, and it was later rewritten to "Give it All" for the first Blofeld album.
TJ and Axe first thought about doing a project together, around 2000, but didn't really have money or motivation to do it. So it took a couple of years, and then Axe came to TJ with a bunch of songs and said "We're gonna take over the world with this shit!" So they decided that they should record it. Both yvind Solheim, and Per Audun Bareksten (from N.U.T.S.) was concidered to do the drums, but Axe figured that they didn't really see eye to eye on a lot of things, and he needed someone he knew was totally into his kind of music, so he thought about letting TJ do both the bass and the drums for the album. TJ, however, have always thought that a band with different guys with different ideas but the same goal always works best, and Geir Solheim, or Winni Blofeld as he was named, was into most of the same music as TJ and Axe, so he was asked to do the drums.
They took the name Blofeld, based on the 007 villain, an idea TJ had from some of the low-points of Juicy Jane. "Everyone commented on how silly the name Juicy Jane was, and that's exactly why we kept it for so long. But it didn't keep me from thinking about other names, Blofeld was one of them!", Axe liked that name, and agreed on using it. "Ooooh yeah!" he said.
Although concidering different guitar-gods to join them, the band has always been very comfortable as a trio. They are working together brilliantly, proven by the fact that they have many times just showed up on a concert and played songs they've only heard or played through a couple of times before. "It's like a hot knife through butter, working with these guys. It's easy as hell. We just get up there and rock everybody's socks off. No question asked. Sometimes we don't even rehearse, we just go up and play a few songs we've heard on the car over to the gig" Axe commented. |
