Artist History
"Uncle Funky" is the musical lovechild of long time friends Greg Allain and Planet Swan.Planet and Greg met through a mutual network of musician friends in the city of Los Angeles, in 1995. Both natives of the city; they were exposed to the vast diversity of urban music, from the rap/latin music of LA from Dr. Dre, Ice T, to the recent Ozomatli; to even the days that bands like Jane's Addiction and The Red Hot Chili Peppers ruled Sunset Blvd. Through individual and joint musical endeavors, they have continued making music together through the years and enjoy the mutual respect of eachothers talents. Allain, a soulful, emotional musician, and innovative songwriter seems the perfect balance to the great melodies of Swan. "I want to be introduced another realm when I collaborate" says Swan; "I find that's natural when I work with Greg"Planet is no stranger to musical collaborations. She's worked with writers Michael Bradford (Kid Rock, New Radicals, Terence Trent D'Arby), Andre Cymone (Prince, Jodi Watley, Tom Jones, & Adam Ant) and has sung with friends Rolan Bolan and the Brothers Bounce (son of Marc "T Rex" Bolan and the beautiful soul singer Gloria Jones) as well as newcomer John Oszajca on Interscope. She grew up the oldest of two girls on the road with her mother a dancer/choreographer, and father singer-songwriter Billy Swan (best known for his 1974 hit ?I Can Help?). Surrounded at a very young age by great songwriters amd producers like Kris Kristofferson, T Bone Burnett, Don Robertson, and Otis Blackwell; little Planet was always inspired and absorbed a large quantity of love for songwriting through these greats. Once signed to MCA, by Tracy Chapman producer Don Gehman, she got a first hand look at the business. Lack of musical direction perhaps soured the deal though. "I learned alot and the whole experience was a very positive one. I'm very, very grateful to Don for taking the time to see potential in me and taking the chance of signing me to his label. I am much clearer now about what I want to do, which allows me to keep one ear open to listen to others and one ear shut to hear my spirit guide me. Greg has been a big inspirational factor in my being able to do that."Greg grew up the youngest of three children. His musical quest began in his early teens, jamming with his friends with whom he collaborates with to this day. He has worked with songwriter Andrew Dorff (Work) and dance music princess Erin Hamilton to name a few. A multi-instrumentalist, he has been able to ?make good with whatever he gets his hands on? says Swan. ?I wish Greg was here so I could give you more insight on him. But I suppose it's his shroud of mystery that is the very thing that I have always had the most fun cracking into myself! He?s an incredible man with alot of beautiful music inside of him.? Today you can hear Greg and Planet as the ?Uncle Funky?........but from what we can see, they will be making lots of noise for the next thousand years.....(Skyleen Lightner, Blue People?s Press) |
