Detroit's Howling Diablos land track on Sun Records
Tribute "Good Rockin' Tonight" (London-Sire Records)
with Rock's Greatest Legends Including Bob Dylan,
Elton John, Paul McCartney and Robert Plant/Jimmy
Page.
Detroit-Perhaps the only act that is not yet a
household name, the Howling Diablos version of Stick
McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine-Spo-Dee-O-Dee" is one of the
stand-out tracks on the new "Good Rockin' Tonight (The
Legacy of Sun Records)" disc.
The Howling Diablos were personally invited by
Atlantic Records pioneer Ahmet Ertegun, (who is also
"Good Rockin' Tonight's" producer) to record "Drinkin'
Wine-Spo-Dee-O-Dee" for the tribute album. The song
has special significance for Ertegun, as it was
Atlantic Record's first big hit, propelling the then
jazz and blues focused label into the national
spotlight.
So how does it feel for the Howling Diablos to be
included on a record alongside rock legends Paul
McCartney (who throws down on "That's All Right Mama")
and Bob Dylan (crooning "Red Cadillac and a Black
Moustache")?! Tino (the Howling Diablos' lead
vocalist) effuses, "It's amazing , sometimes I pinch
myself . It's incredible to be on this record with
our heroes. But on the other hand we are musicians
too and we can hang . I think we're supposed to be on it
and we're really grateful."
While longtime Howing Diablos fan and supporter Kid
Rock joins the band on "Drinkin' Wine-Spo-Dee-O-Dee",
when he first heard the Howling Diablos version, the
multi-platinum artist was reluctant to add his
trademark rap vocals because he liked their tracks so
much.
And what exactly is Wine-Spo-Dee-O-Dee? Tino
explains, "It's an old term, a blues thing when all
the winos would take the last of what's left in the
bottles , and pour it all together to create a big
mash. They would share it ... a big slop bucket full of
alcohol."
"Good Rockin' Tonight" hit the streets on October 30th.
The Howling Diablos will also be featured in
the network television special directed by
award-winning filmmaker Bruce Sinofsky that will air
in November and be available on DVD.
Listen for the Howling Diablos track on college and
commercial radio. The catchy "Drinkin'
Wine-Spo-Dee-O-Dee" is sure to be a hit for music
lovers of all ages.
editor's note:
Howling Diablos are available for interviews. CD,
