Press Reviews
July 1999 NIGHT MOVES MAGAZINEBobbo StaronMY NAME IS ROBERTBobbo Staron, the former leader of Ayn Rand (a west coast punk club staple,) has just recently released MY NAMES IS ROBERT, his second solo effort and it’s far from being punk.Considered to be “post punk modern folk” by Bobbo himself, the album’s acoustic guitar gives it an earthy feel and his humorous approach to serious issues with his lyrics hits home without getting you down. Together, the vocals and lyrics work in an almost mystical way, drawing you into the song. It makes you want to listen to it again, as it really grows. My favorite cut was a tune entitled “The State Of New Jersey.”Staron isn’t following any trends here, as I can’t say that he sounds like anyone, but may be similar in a way to Mojo Nixon. When you listen to this CD, you know Staron is doing this for the right reason, which is himself, he enjoys it and that affects the listener in a positive way. If more musicians would be as brave as Staron with their music instead of trying to figure out what would sell, the state of music wouldn’t be so stale. For a change of pace and a breath of fresh air, check this one out for yourself. - Patrick M.
