Artist description John Torres is a 25-year-old singer/songwriter from Los Angeles, California with a passion for music and a dream to live by faith, be known by love, and be a voice of hope to the world around him. A recent graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles, with a degree in English Literature, he has spent his last four years developing his music. Despite not being trained in music theory, he began writing music around the age of fifteen, and has to date written and co-written over 70 songs. John's earliest vocal influences include Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Brian McKnight. In contrast however, John has been influenced by the songwriting of artists such as Nick Drake, Dave Mathews and Bob Marley. At UCLA, John was recognized at the University's annual talent competition Spring Sing (held at the Los Angeles Tennis Center annually to sold out crowds), where he premiered his song "Living Without You." In the four years performing in the competition, John won a total of 4 awards (including the Grand Sweepstakes Award for best overall act with Awaken A Cappella). Also while at UCLA, John performed the lead role in The Tiny Band Production's "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Freud Theatre. This role won him the attention of Composer/Producer Damon Intrabartolo and led to John's recording debut with his performance of the single "Wrong" (written by Intrabartolo) on the soundtrack of Urban Legends: Final Cut, as well as his theatrical and vocal performance in the 2001 Ovation winning "bare: a pop opera" (Intrabartolo and Jon Hartmere, Jr.) As far as John's immediate goals are concerned, he plans to devote the present to performing as much as possible. He has played in and around Hollywood, in clubs such as The Viper Room, The Whiskey A Go-Go and The Gig, and intends to continue playing the Los Angeles scene over the course of the next year.
