Artist description
Considering his humble upbringing in Anderson,
Indiana, Dane Clark has pounded out quite an
impressive mark on the music industry. During
his career, Dane has played drums for an eclectic
mix of artists including Bob Woodruff,
Carrie Newcomer, Kennedy Rose and Lisa Germano.
However, his most notable affiliation has been
with the every man heartland rocker, John
Mellencamp. Clark has anchored the rhythm
section on several of Mellencamp's albums,
including his highly acclaimed and most recent
hit, "Peaceful World".
While Dane is widely respected as an accomplished
drummer, his versatility transcends any notion
that his talents begin and end in the percussion
section. In addition to writing and producing his
own debut CD, Dane has recently produced Carl
Storie's self-titled album, while also working
with some of Nashville's most decorated writers
including Marianne Kennedy and Mark Cawley.
"Born and raised in Anderson, Indiana, I started
playing the piano at age 8, the guitar at age 9,
and drums at age 10. I sang my first original
song at my 6th grade talent show, but lost to a
one-legged ballet dancer! I took that defeat in
stride and tenaciously kept chasing the muse.
After growing my hair long in high school, I
immersed myself in the 1950's beat poets like
Kerouac and Ginsberg, as well as the 1960's
archetypes like Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling
Stones, the Byrds, the Doors and the Kinks. I
then headed off to college on a music scholarship
and graduated with a degree in percussion
performance. I started doing session work as a
drummer in the Indianapolis area, all the while
continuing to hone the craft of songwriting. I
assumed the drummer's duties in John Mellencamp's
band in 1996 and have enjoyed that position ever
since.
I now live with four women (my wife Teena and my
daughters Emily, Taylor, and Abigail), a ping
pong table and a mangy dog named Jesse.
In the past year, I have put together a full
blast rock combo to play the songs on this album,
which I wrote and produced. My hope for the
future? Dane Clark songs in every living room!"

Press Reviews
"One of the best American singer/songwriters I've
heard in a long time - Dane's roots grow deep
indeed: all the way from Memphis down to
Liverpool..." - Elliot Murphy. "Dane Clark is a
poignant songwriter who embraces
you with his stories while delivering a ferocious
groove and imaginative production with stunning
colors and textures for an audiocentric journey." - Ray Kennedy. "Great songs..great arrangements. Good songs
don't grow on trees - they grow on people." - Ian Hunter.
Headline: "Dane Clark both reveals, transcends Mellencamp"
"With this debut, Dane Clark establishes himself
as much more than simply the guy who followed
Kenny Aronoff in the drummer's chair of John
Mellencamp's band.
Clark the singer-songwriter does gravitate to
"heartland" rock, but his tunes aren't rewrites
of his boss's catalog. This album is more
suggestive of Tom Petty on a British Invasion
kick.
Thematically, it's a solid set of messages
comparable to Don Henley's "The End of the
Innocence." Clark's outlook alternates between
disillusionment ("Desperate Days" and "Harmeson
Hills") and romanticism ("I'll Be Your Heart"
and "The Last Great Mystery").
When Clark briefly echoes Mellencamp, the
bare-boned riffs of "Four Letter Word" are a
vibrant flashback to the "American Fool" era.
But enough about roots and influences. The
uplifting jangle of "Abigail Rose" -- a loving
(but not too sentimental) father-to-daughter
tribute -- sets Clark apart as an original.
The galloping "More Than a Landslide" challenges
"Abigail" for best-song honors.
Knowing that today's best heartland rock is made
in Nashville, Clark enlisted two of Music
City's finest to mix (Ray Kennedy, one-half of
Steve Earle's "Twangtrust") and master
(Hank Williams, too many credits to count)
the recording.
Perhaps surprisingly, Clark's sincere vocals
outshine his drumming and guitar playing.
Although his sound doesn't fit "today's trends"
and it probably won't tomorrow, Clark delivers a
bundle of honesty and conviction." - Reviewed by
