Artist description
Message Machine is a dynamic new band hailing from Seattle, Washington. Consisting of only guitar, bass, and drums, their repetoire spans a surprisingly wide variety of styles, as one can hear in listening to any of their original compositions. This is partly because each member of the trio has a background in both Jazz and Rock, and they each share an appetite for discovering new music.
Formed in September 2002, the band is young and fresh, as are it's members, none of whom have even reached 22 years. But it is their youthful energy and enthusiasm that seems to have left an impression on their audiences. The music is perhaps best described as Jazz-funk, but there is more to it than that, as at any time they might abandon it for a Bossa Nova or a barely recognizable modern jazz interpretation of Scarborough Fair. The result is exciting, upbeat music with a spontaneous feel.
Response to Message Machine has been overwhelmingly positive, and they have steadily been building a loyal following since they emerged in the fall of 2002. They have enjoyed packed houses at venues like the HUB Ballroom at the University of Washington and cafes like Mr. Spot's Chai House and Zoka. In March 2003 they recorded their debut album, "Home Brewed Slippery Jazz Funk".

With the popularity of bands like The White Stripes, The Vines and The Hives, local rock bands around UW have set their sights high. Students in up-and-coming bands like The Lawnsharks and the Message Machine are ready to take UW and the music world by storm.
Another band with a UW connection is The Message Machine. The band packed the HUB dinning room last week with its loud drums, electric guitar and bass. The group.s non-lyrical approach is made up of fast and furious sets of rock, jazz, Latin and bluegrass. The mix creates a unique sound that complements the three types of music.
The young band, formed last September, consists of bass player and UW student Birch Pereira, lead guitarist Tyrell Allen and drummer David Bush. The name Message Machine originated from Allen, who saw a sticky note with the words .message machine. written on it.
As part of The Message Machine, Pereira loves to play his music for enjoyment. "I love to perform and it feels great," said Pereira. He hopes to get people to listen to the band.s music and build a widespread audience. "By performing at as many gigs as possible and playing constantly we'll hopefully build an audience," said Pereira.
The Message Machine has rigorous practice sessions, sometimes logging 10 hours in a single week. "We practice to build endurance," said Pereira. Most of Pereira's time is dedicated to music, not academics.
For publicity, the band has passed out fliers, cards and told friends about its gigs. This effort has proven effective for the band. As a result, the band has played every week for the past month. The band's most memorable gig was on Valentine's Day at Mr. Spots Chai House in Ballard. "We had nine back-up dancers, which created a fun atmosphere"
