Artist History
Mike Barr and Patrick Anderson met in 7th grade
at Bunker Middle School, and ever since then
their friendship has grown tremendously (aww, how
gay). Over the next 3 years they traded CDs,
wrestled in the backyard, and attended numerous
Fury games. By 11th grade, they, along with Nate
Brott, they were best friends, and for Christmas
that year, Patrick received his first guitar.
Since then, he and Mike had wanted to start a
band, but after a year of trying still no band.
But one cool winter day, Mike and Patrick
stumbled onto a gold mine, and created the
Penis Song. It was quite a popular song among
friends. It's catchy music and interesting and
creative lyrics is the same recipe that fuels
the Toad to this day. Enter Thorsen. Mike and
Patrick met Nate Thorsen during their 11th grade
year. They had started attending shows together
and eventually became good friends with him.
During his 11th grade year, a year behind Mike
and Patrick, he decided he wanted to play an
instrument. There were so many guitar players
and he couldn’t afford drums, so he bought a
bass, and he sucked penis. So, he sold his bass
to Patrick and saved his money. Guitar Center
was having a huge sale and through some miracle,
his dad gave him a ride and he got his drum set.
Patrick and Nate tried to jam a few times but
Thorsen didn't know thing one about drumming,
and he had no cymbals. But after acquiring some
cymbals and a short drum lesson, he was on his
way to becoming one of the greats (well, an OK
anyway). Then Mike and Patrick graduated and
summer began. Grad party after grad party,
hanging out and having fun. Then the faithful
day, Punks in the Park. Everyone came out to
see the greats the Wack Trucks. This show alone
fueled the fire inside Thorsen and he demanded
Mike and Patrick start a band with him. Mike was
going to play bass, which he couldn't and
Patrick was going to sing and play guitar, which
he couldn't. They needed a bass amp so they
bought Corey's right then for $180. The show was
over and they headed to the car but something
wasn't right...there was this kid with a giant
red fro and glasses following them to the car.
Patrick and Thorsen both had the look of "who the
hell is this?" on their faces. It was Mike
Larson, and he and Mike had known each other
because they are like fifth cousins or something.
He joined them and they packed up the equipment
and headed for Thorsen's, where they sucked.
They had nothin. After about 20 minutes of suck
fest 2002, Larson asked to see the bass, and he
could actually play it. In the window of
opportunity, Larson joined and Mike could go back
to singing as planned. They called it quits but
decided to practice in a few days. Even though
everyone but Thorsen thought that this band was
a joke, Patrick worked on some music, one riff
in particular, and Mike found some old lyrics.
When they met back they got some music down and
that one riff eventually became Corey Loves the
Cock, their first song. Now they needed a name.
Many were concidered (the lime green peaches,
the window lickers, the tater tots) but magic
the gathering came to the rescue and ChubToad
was born. After a couple more jams they had
something to work with but little progress was
made. Then all of a sudden they had a burst of
creativity and such classics were born as Take
it Out, Every Neil Young song, Grandma, Butt Rock,
and ChubToad Hop. Mike and Patrick then decided
to resurrect the Penis Song, a sure classic.
Larson then made a website and got them a small
following. With 7 songs under their belt that
recorded a demo, and it was sad. Mike was still
singing out of a 15 watt amp so he and Patrick
left Thorsen $500 to get a P.A. with and he did
just that. After moving the practice space to
Mike's house they turned out Republicans Suck.
They went to Warped Tour, and when they got back
they had a show. August 10th at the Fruitport
Bandshell. Although it wasn't originally their
show to set up, they were the driving force
behind making it happen. They worked hard and
they were ready but they needed one thing, so
the called on an old friend...Steve Madole. Patrick and Thorsen
had the idea of creating a mascot for the band,
a chubby toad. Steve agreed to become the toad,
so late one night at Glenside Pub Thorsen
designed the costume, and over the next few days
Patrick put it into effect. All their friends
would agree that the first show rocked hard, even
though they sucked so bad. However, they all felt
something special, and knew they had never seen
anything quite like ChubToad. About a month had
gone by, they picked up some covers and Tuna
Round and The Whore were born. Then out of
nowhere, Tim had hooked them up with a show at
Rock Harbor Cafe. This time around, they stunned
the crowd and their following grew. Although
Steve couldn't make it, it was a good show.
Their next show was at the Harbor on October
11th. The show was a disaster. Their performance
wasn't bad but they had huge conflicts with the
owners. They were turned of for the word "ass"
but every other band said far worse things than
that and nothing happened. They were pissed. They
felt take advantage of, like an 8 year old girl
in an ally at 3 in the morning. But they would
not be pushed around because they were a young,
irregular band, so they decided to stand up for
themselves. On October 25th, with Steve present,
they had their CD release party at the Harbor and
they came out rockin'! Selling 40 CDs that night,
about 1 in 5 bought one, they were happy. But
they found out that some kid stole almost 20 CDs
from them. They vowed to get him, but even that
would not slow down the Toad.
This is just the beginning of the Legend of
Chubtoad. As Mysterious as a Magic Eight-Ball, as Immortal as the Highlander, and as Entertaining
as a Snowboarding Moose on heroin, The Toad will
forever be imbedded in the hearts and minds of the people who came to love and embrace them.
THE END
oh and they lived happily ever after... |
