Artist description Snoop Stepanov hails from the colourful Novostranian farming village of Vkrvmpl and is 29 years old this year. His mother, Myszka Stepanov, spent her working life in a tannery, curing the hides of weasels for export to China, where the leathery strips are (censored by information police) to improve “bedroom performance”. She passed away early in 2001, bequeathing a bag of potatoes, a small jar of lovingly pickled cucumber and a handful of onions to her only son. Touched by this gesture, a monument carved from potatoes was raised in the village square to commemorate the wonderful woman who brought please to so many small people. Viktor Stepanov, his father, was a member of the local police force and raised his son in a terribly strict environment. Snoop learned at a very young age that emotional expressions were frowned upon. He spent a hard childhood, walking in the mountains around Vkrvmpl, hunting for wild onions in the green forests and looking rather glum. His relationship with his father changed dramatically for the better after Myszka passed away and Viktor finally began to recover from the emotional wounds that the hurtful “weasel-skin” jokes had inflicted upon him. Emotionally scarred but free, he left Vkrvmpl for Paris to pursue a career in burlesque. Encouraged by his fathers bold career move, Snoop also decided to pursue a career in entertainment and started taking singing lessons with the local town crier, known only as “Katya.” Katya proved to be a great teacher and is said to have cried during Snoops first public performance of “Potatoes Rock.” The Novastranian talent scout tasked with finding the sure-fire winner of the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest was also present for this stirring performance and the rest, as they say, is history.
