Artist description
Slapmaster Steven is devoted to the spirit of improvisation and groove-oriented music, the sounds and lyrics culminating in a message of freedom and hope, though we are skeptics of the absolute. Inspired by such innovators as Miles Davis and the Jim(i/my)'s, guitarist/vocalist Terry Renaud creates an aural-visual presence both on stage and in the studio. Likewise, bassist Matt Zirbes is an avid disciple of such greats as Jaco Pastorius, Jack Bruce, and the more contemporary Flea. James Hosley's drum style can in part be attributed to the work of Billy Cobham, Dennis Chambers, and David Garibaldi. When together, Slapmaster Steven is a powerful force, with a unique and unified direction. The band is constantly in search of that place where music and man are one. |

Artist History
In early 2001, the band which would become known as Slapmaster Steven was conceived. Aside from replacing original drummer and friend Zach Kirsch, the lineup has remained constant. Slapmaster has spent its time since then developing its style and establishing itself as a force with which to be reckoned. Always progressive, the band is forever diversifying its musical approaches, but at the same time unifying its direction. Slapmaster unfortunately has gone on hiatus since separation for college in the fall, 2003. SMS looks forward to the endless summer of 2004. |
