    Artist History
Sean Fox was raised in Northern California, but if you ask his mother, he was never home much. He grew up listening to the soul, blues, and jazz artists that inspire many musicians, which put him exactly 40 years behind the times (Sean discovered “this crazy thing called hip-hop” last year). He wrote his first song when he was 9 and instantly knew he could use music to find solace, express himself, and get girls. After graduating early from High School and spending time between Northern California and Hollywood, Fox attended the illustrious Jazz program at the University of Southern California for one year. When he realized no one there really wanted to make music, he headed for the more intellectually stimulating but hygienically challenged hills of Santa Cruz, California. Armed with a double degree in Economics and Literature, Sean recently headed East to New York City, where he is now pursuing music full time. Musically, Fox hopes to inject a “secular gospel” tradition into the rock/pop genre he inhabits. The characters that populate his songs never leave the grim and complex realities of everyday love and loss, but Sean’s voice stretches towards an emotional transcendence. His lyrics and voice reflect the restlessness of his geographic relocations and the intensity of a life spent moving. Like the early work of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits, Fox operates on a deceptive simplicity. Often, the ‘real’ story behind his songs is a tension between the lyrics and the music itself – one screaming for change while the other offers a familiar warmth. For all of us who enjoy his music, this is a tension that, hopefully, Fox will never resolve.
