BAND: Catalyst
RELEASE: Rip Off Essentials
At first listen, the gravelly defiant vocals of frontwoman Shelby are both captivating and intriguing. There's always something about female fronted rock bands that's provocative and intriguing, especically when they avoid being sterotyped into any sort of "girl-power" genre. The vocals here are intense and indifferent all at once, recalling Shirley Manson of Garbage and Andrea from Pepper Sands. From the opening progressions of "Slag" it's eerily evident that Catalyst has a great deal of talent and potential - whether to be harnessed or wasted remains to be seen. My favourite thing about listening to this CD was the recurring thought that I could very well be listening to one of the top acts in Canada five years before they hit it big. All of the elements are there for mainsteam success - capable musicianship, the building blocks of competant songwriting, and catchy tunes.
There's no denying that the band is very raw and has a long way to go before explointing all of the talent encased in the four piece. Shelby has no prior singing experience and none of the band is out of their teens, but instead of a negative it makes listening to the record even more titillating. The opening four tracks of the disc were enough to make me want to keep listening, perfect as the meat of the record hits around track six - the appropriately ironic misspelled "Inocence" has depth and substance beyong the bands' collective years. The real treat is the unexpected cover of Silverchair's "Israel's Son," as immediately upon listening to the tracks and discovering the youth of the band comparisons can be drawn to the Aussie sensation. Daniel Johns was a mere 15 when he wrote that track, and his evolution into one of the premier songwriters in the mainstream world may be foreshadowing of Catalyst's future.
There's nothing better than being able to write a positive review of a record for a band so eager and enthusiastic as Catalyst appears to be. Detractors will point to the rawness and unrefined qualities the band can't help but embody, and will also make a point of proclaiming that grunge died with Kurt Cobain, but this record is worth owning. Pick it up now to say you knew the band when they still had trouble spelling "Israel."
