dB Review April '03'
Local group Borderland have good reason to be proud of their debut EP ‘Radio Silence’. For those unfamiliar with the group’s sound, they’re best described as a blend of powerful instrumental sequences, coupling some heavy riffing with subtle use of turntables and mixers to create an almost ambient element to their work. Although their music has been referenced to such acts as Deftones and POD Borderland's sound allows them to stand alone.
Kritical provides an impressively powerful introduction to a collection of intelligent tracks, abundant in appeal for fans of varying musical genres. Kritical is a mix of heavy guitar and drum sequences with a combination of clean-cut vocals and up-beat tempo changes, providing a great introduction to the EPs title track. Radio Silence starts out slow, with melodic interludes establishing the foundation of the track, before the group’s trademark progression into an impressively written chorus, with turntables once again reinforcing the subtle ‘anarchy’ of the song for the listener.
It's hard to find fault with this release, given the group’s ability to construct contemporary heavy rock songs. ‘Radio Silence’ is an excellent tool for Borderland to gain the recognition which they undoubtedly deserve. Although the EP itself only contains four tracks, with Radio Silence appearing in both an edited and unedited version, it’s certainly one leaving the listener waiting for more.
