Artist History
Curtis King, stepped into the musical arena from birth when he was named after saxophonist legend King Curtis. To his future dismay he was one of the few in his family
who picked up an instrument, being surrounded by a family of guitarists, church organists
and various other string instrument players. Not to be daunted, he harnessed his voice
to work his American birthrights with his West Indian slang to become a founding
member of one of the first Island Hip Hop rap groups in Barbados.
After migrating back to the States he continued pursuing a rap career that gained him a finalist award in the John Lennon Songwriting contest. After moving to Boston and becoming a semifinalist of the King of Slam poetry competitions at the established Nuyorican Poets Café he joined the Boston Black Out Arts Collective- an assembly of spoken word artists, dancers, singers etc. Since then he has opened for poet laureate
Amiri Baraka as well as the Jeff Robinson Trio and the Boston Jazz Repertory Orchestra.
