Artist description
Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, The Very Foundation take driving, fuzzed-out post-punk rock, replete with churning guitars and propulsive rhythms, and matches it with dense vocal harmonies, varying sound oddities, lo-fi sampling, obtuse polyrhythms and hints of angular art-rock orchestration.
Produced by garage-rock upstart producer Patrick Kearns (The Exploding Hearts, Goddamn Gentleman), The Final Moments of Paola Mori, the debut EP from this Portland, OR quintet, churns with frothing urgency. From the thundering battle cry of Orson Welles to the intimate ache of Madrigal, each song hints at grandiose tales, detailing through abstract yet evocative lyrics the travails of characters whose sojourns are veiled in mystery and littered with half-truths, allowing the listener only brief, vivid snapshots of a larger story.
Lead singer Mike Lewis's raw delivery plays counter point to the atmospheric vocal gymnastics of backing vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Jesse Kinder and the anthemic lead playing of guitarist Ryan Dicker. Meanwhile, recently added bassist Ryan Mullen and drummer Bevan pound beneath thick walls of distorted guitar counterpoint with adept precision and power, before pulling back into a quiet minimalism that allows the band's soaring harmonies to spill through.
