Artist History On a rainy weekend in September 2001 Ilja Edwards and René van de Polder are on their way to the English town Colchester. Armed with a guitar and an electronic piano this duo is going to perform in an English pub were some of their English friends are working. These two friends know each other for a very long time but they ran on to each other some years after they both finished high school. The fist thing they did was talk about music. Ilja told he wanted to form a band and that he could use a keyboard player as well Rene has been playing for many years and he wanted to form a band with his mate Sander who was an old schoolmate as well. They formed a band called No Decision and within a couple of weeks of hard practice the first No decision songs were there. Unfortunately 15 year old drummer Eelco Ladan had to leave the band because of lack of time and school grade-problems. The band tried to carry on unfortunately without any result. After Eelco some other members joined the band. No decision did some gigs with some cover songs and Ilja and René were ready to write some new material but they put it away in the cupboard for possible later usage. After many efforts to accomplish something with this formation Rene and Ilja came to the conclusion that there wasn’t anything happening with this band anymore. The songs became boring and even though the enthusiasm was still there, the guys didn’t seem to enjoy themselves anymore. But here in Colchester, there were standing 2 songwriters who had loads of new material Ready to be presented to a selective crowd in a nice pub called THE CASTLE. The response of the crowd was stunning : “ With this music you guys can play anywhere in the UK , I am telling you , anywhere…..” For Ilja and René everything became even clearer then their own feeling told them. But one thing was for sure They had to form a new band again and practice until they had their own new setlist again. After months of thinking and searching for other musicians the solution for the How-do-we-get-a-new-band problem was already out there. Old No Decision drummer Eelco Ladan really felt he wanted something new after a period With different bands and Sander didn’t mind grabbing a bass guitar for a change In October 2001 the four guys started rehearsing some new songs for a couple of months On new years eve Rene called Ilja on his cellular phone with the message he had a new band name: Silvan was born. Some songs were really taking shape in this period so the next step was performing on stage again. They chose a local theatre in Brielle for the debut gig The stage was pretty and the sound was good. Ramon Kruik, good friend of Ilja and cousin of Rene was working there so he could take charge of the engineering part of the gig. The night was a huge success; more than 120 people came to the gig After a long period of time the guys wanted to record some material. They recorded three songs in Utrecht. This demo will be released in October. The music of Silvan can be described in many ways but the main issue would be FEELING The band is inspired by such names as; Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Heather Nova, Muse and Coldplay and many others, One of the main conditions that the band made is continuing progression talking about progression meaning the music and the progress of the band itself. The members have been friends for a very long time and know eachother musical preference and they understand their musical ambitions and they all have the same goal to reach to. Press Reviews PERFORMANCE THEATRE DE GOOTE A HUGE SUCCES Sold out theatre was the grateful result of months of practising and preparation. On this evening, all organised and financed by the members of Silvan themselves, they had their first official live performance. In the cultural theatre de Goote, located in Brielle, 120 people were witness of this great debut gig. Silvan presented an evening filled with fine music and a magic atmosphere. On 3 of the, in total, 16 songs a guest musician joined in to subtly contribute to a theatrical dimension. The all, except one, in red dressed band members seemed to enjoy themselves big time. Although in general the songs were modest. Ilja sometimes tried to get closer to the audience by making silly jokes. And the seemed to like it. Thanks to the light and sound engineers the lightening on stage and the sound quality reached high levels. Maybe this was one of the reasons the evening became a night to never forget. Especially the band members of Silvan won’t forget that magical feeling this evening has brought them. Silvan would like to thank all of you who supported us during this gig
