Artist History
"I truly believe that one person's ideas can change the world. It's been done, with both wonderful and tragic results. I have devoted myself to trying to help change hip-hop and the perceived image of the black male for the better. Find your purpose and make that change. Remember: ignorance is running rampant. The fact that you have this album in your hands tells me that you are interested in something other than that. Now I challenge you - help me provide BALANCE. -- Akrobatik
Black and White. Gangster and Grown-Up. Party and Politics. In a search for some semblance of stability and sense, the hardest part is finding a comfortable equilibrium. Locating a happy medium. Striking a BALANCE.
Boston's Akrobatik represents the best in hip-hop music -- creative and thought-provoking content, thundering beats, energetic live performance, and a deep respect for the tradition of artists that paved the way. Akrobatik is a hip-hop legend in the making, a true school rapper and performer who commands a stage with his powerful voice.
As a rapper, a producer and occasionally DJ (check for the cuts on "Here and Now"), think KRS One meets Chuck D. Born Jared Bridgeman, Akrobatik grew up in Dorchester, MA. A staple of the Boston hip-hop scene since the early 1990s, Akrobatik first broke into the national spotlight in 1998 with the release of his debut single "Ruff Enough." His next single, "Internet MCs," dropped the following year on Rawkus Records/ Eastern Conference, sold 12,000 units worldwide, and set up his debut EP, Akrobatik: The EP in 1999. Several singles were released from the EP, and Akrobatik topped the college charts around the country, cracking into the commercial mixshow market with the release of his following single, "SayYesSayWord," a party anthem/hip-hop tribute that received airplay from Boston to Australia.
On Balance, Akrobatik delivers the dexterous rhymes his name suggests while rocking bodies with clever, bold beats. Featuring contributions from Mr. Lif, Da Beatminerz, Diamond D, Fakts One, and more, Balance is a fine work of independent hip-hop art.
Akrobatik has toured the world alongside the very best in hip-hop and beyond, including Eminem, The Roots, Company Flow, Busta Rhymes, Souls of Mischief, Cannibal Ox, KRS-One, Mos Def & Talib Kweli, Mr. Lif and many, many others. Akrobatik has also worked with some of the best names in rap music in the studio, including Guru, Afu Ra, Mr. Lif, EDO.G and KRS One.
Following the release of Balance, Akrobatik and long-time partners Mr. Lif and Fakts One will collaborate on the highly anticipated debut project from their group, The Perceptionists. Look for The Perceptionists' album in Fall of 2003.
