    Artist History
Through six years of music, and several transformations two constants have remained: We're still writing music that moves us, and we're still chasing a dream. As the front-woman of Brave the Day, I've opted to tell you about our band in a confessional style, rather than the traditional "bio" style, because I've never been comfortable with the latter. Let's face it, the words that you're reading right now were written by me, whether or not I pretend that they were written by an impassioned rock journalist. I might as well take credit for it. The current incarnation of bravetheday is centered between the songwriting team of Joshua Kesler (guitar), and myself, Rebecca Miller (voice). Joshua is responsible for laying the groundwork, and does so with playing and songwriting that are both painstakingly crafted. Joshua is the type of musician that locks himself in a room for hours with nothing but a gallon of water, a notebook, and his equipment. Specializing in alternate guitar tunings and meticulously developed chord structures, Joshua gives bravetheday much of the sweet, sad, and desperately yearning sound that we've become known for. I have always described his songs as the perfect bed for my voice to lie on. As a singer, I strive to convey complete honesty and sincere emotion. I too, locked myself in a room, but I surrounded myself with the voices of Tori Amos, Jeff Buckley, and Radiohead's Thom Yorke. These artists played a major role in the development of my singing style, and also the approach that I take to writing melody and lyric. Joshua's songs complete my identity as a singer by effortlessly inspiring the thought and feeling that enable me to write lyrics that are meaningful and to consequently, sing those lyrics with true passion. Completing the core bravetheday is bassist Jason Ganis. With a style that is more melodic than rhythmic, Jason's playing is the perfect compliment to complete our moody sound. In 2001, bravetheday were ready to commit newer songs to a recording. We wanted to make something that reflected the progress that we had made, but were stumped on how to foot the bill. We contacted Philadelphia band Grey Eye Glances, whom we had opened for several times to ask for advice. Much to our surprise and delight, two members of Grey Eye Glances Dwayne Keith and Brett Kull, took a serious interest in the project, and offered to engineer and produce the recording. With their wisdom and absolute devotion we were able to make a self-titled EP that transcended even our own expectations. In April of 2002, I entered bravetheday song "The Search" in a nationwide songwriting competition sponsored by Pantene titled Pro-Voice. The contest was open to females only, and out of nearly 2,000 entries "The Search" placed in the top 5. As a result, bravetheday performed in front of over 5,000 people at a concert held on Central Park's Summer Stage with Michelle Branch serving as our headliner. Our successful performance in front of such a large audience marks our biggest accomplishment to date and has left us hungry for more. Our goal is and has always been to make music that we love and that others will connect with. After getting a taste of this at Pro-Voice we are more committed than ever to make this dream a reality. There are miles to go before we sleep...
