obsessed and isolated from pop culture in boulderDEADENDcolorado saint sophia honed a sound that was both original and accessible before relocating to seattle WA in the fall of 1999. what sets the band apart from many indierawk peers is that music was not their primary influence. the band set about creating albums and songs that flowed cinematically or with the inevitable flow of a haruki murakami novel. they recorded their first album 'example: i die on my knees' (to be released by LittleGirlEmpire in november 1999) with a man named shark at a place called purplefish studio and nearly broke up over whether a shark was a fish or a mammal. the songs on their first record flow from one to the next...hypnotic like a car accident and twice as beautiful. their second record 'the deepsweet nothings network' streamlines the melodic and infectious elements of 'example' while placing the sophians firmly on the experimental fringe of the poprawk universe...their aesthetic is an inspired mating of gary numans lonely android with the velvet undergrounds lonely junky...of faulkners stream of consciousness flow and david lynchs tightly wound camera angles. taking their name from author Phillip K Dicks paranoid masterpiece VALIS and their influence from a diverse scattering of underground and mainstream bands saint sophia intends to be a central figure in the new breed of experimental pop bands currently emerging around the country. welcome to the LittleGirlEmpire... |
