The songwriting and singing of Lian Amber have been described by critics as "unusual, original and highly moving" and feature an eclectic mix of her soulful and heartfelt vocals, stellar songwriting & eclectic modern arrangements. She is currently recordi ng her first album of original material to be completed in Summer 2002.
Lian's new album "Lotus Flower" is a mix of jazz, folk, world and soul-based harmony and vocals with unusual rhythms, instrumentation and arrangements. Artist History
Lian was featured on the 1995 Hector Zazou & Harold Budd album "Glyph" (Crammed Disc Records), where she was the only vocal contributor. Her track, "And She Stepped Aside" garnered much well-deserved attention on the popular radio show "Morning Becomes Ec lectic" on Los Angeles radio station KPFA. She also wrote and performed "Who Will Accept My Tears" on an album by her frequent collaborator, guitarist Dave Manley and Deep PM that was released in 1999.
Singing and performing since she was a child, Lian i s the daughter of Bay Area jazz singer and vocal coach Maye Cavallaro, and the grand-daughter of a concert pianist on her father's side and an opera singer on her mother's. She has studied music at UCLA, SFSU, and most recently at the New School for Soc ia l Research Jazz Program. Involved in music throughout her life, Lian has a deep interest in many different styles and the music of many countries. She has studied Indian, Balkan, Asian, Arabic and African musics as well as more conventional styles such as jazz, soul, blues, pop and opera.
In addition to her music, Lian has traveled extensively, spent a year in India, and has visited Africa, the Middle East, Western and Eastern Asia, and Europe. She is an award-winning actress, who's debut starring per for mance in "Longshot", which she co-wrote, won the First Prize, Montbelliard Festival, France. She has previously been a music and arts features journalist for Associated Press and other music magazines, and a rap and soul columnist. She was a poular nightc lub DJ in the SF Bay Area, spinning both early funk and soul and traditional ethnic musics. She is also an accompished graphic designer who has designed web sites and CD covers for numerous other artists, as well as this site. She currently runs the small record label FuzeLicious Morsels, who have released four CD's in the past two years, in addition to recording her debut.
Performing professionally for over fifteen years, Lian has shared the stage with The Groove Collective, Frank Foster, Reggie Wor kman, Hector Zazou and Harold Budd, David Fiuczynski, Dave Manley of Deep PM, Adam Rogers of Lost Tribe, Derrick Bronston of The Hush, and Gbatokai Dakinah, Jr. of the Bell Band, as well as many other excellent New York and San Francisco musicians. She is a gifted lyricist and melodic writer, and a talented arranger.
Ms. Amber is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, and relocated to New York City in 1993. She now resides with her husband, cult guitar hero David 'Fuze' Fiucznyski in Woodstock, NY.
