By Joe Hartlaub
...so I'm multitasking, talking on the phone, answering e-mail, and listening to VOID, a new CD by a band named Lightyear, when I open an e-mail from a friend of mine who is in her mid-30s and really into hard rock, and she's bemoaning the fact that she just bought a CD by a huge band (we'll call it "Quarterfront") that is all over the radio and MTV and, to her dismay, there are only two good songs and the rest suck. And I'm on like, track 9 of VOID and it's still kicking my ass from one end of casa de Hartlaub to the other, hooks all over the place, volume, energy, everything you'd want, I mean this stuff is fantastic, from beginning to end, and I'm wondering how it is that "Quarterfront" is selling millions of copy and Lightyear doesn't even really have a deal? As a Nashville songwriter recently stated to me, "Somethin's broke here, man." Yes indeedy.
I only know a little about Lightyear. They're based out of Tempe, Arizona, and used to be known as Six-Point Restraint. Some of the members of Lightyear have been playing together for six years, which is almost as long as some of my marriages have lasted. What I can tell you is that there's nothing fancy about these guys, it's guitars, bass, and drums, no pussy synthesizers or anything like that, just your basic rock outfit like God intended. At times they remind me of Quicksand ("Blacklight," "The Stage," "Corridor"); at other times they remind me of a cross between Better than Ezra ("Angel," "Conscious Sleep") and Def Leppard ("One Way Street," "Stonewall") with the good qualities left in and magnified one hundred-fold and the bad stuff left out. Oh, yeah, and drummer Aaron Bland has both his arms. The rockers ("Orifice," "Altar Girl") are killer, the power ballads ("Hello Goodbye," "Caterpillar," "Forlorn") are great, and all of it should be all over the radio. They can also harmonize with sounding on the one hand like they're gargling razorblades on the one hand or ballsless castrati on the other. Another positive is that I don't see any tattoos, either; there are of course the requisite piercings and facial hair, but it's no worse than what you'd find on your girl friend or your mother.
These guys are so good, so energetic, and so into what they're doing that if I had a radio station I'd play 'em, right now, and they wouldn't even have to pay me to do it. In fact, if you're in the 614 area code, e-mail me and I'll call you back and play you some of it. It's that good. Trade that used "Quarterfront" CD in and put the booty toward VOID.
