Artist History
Every band has its story, and Grown At Home is definitely a band so it must have a story. Now, almost every band’s story begins the same way: a group of friends got together, wrote some songs and played some gigs. Not this band. We like to do things differently. Grown At Home, much like all brilliant ideas, began as a drunken wager.
The original line up included Nick, Bob, Alex, Dom, Rob, Edd and Chris, and was concocted on the spur of the moment at Rugeley’s infamous Red Rose Theatre. The plan was to create a new ‘ska-punk’ band (and I use the term extremely loosely) in the space of a week, convince the promoters at the Red Rose that they were a real band with real experience, get support slots with decent headlining punk bands, and therefore get into gigs for free…
The first show consisted of around three and a bit songs – mostly complete nonsense – but thankfully this was engulfed by the most impressive stage performance the Rugeley punters had ever laid eyes on. A mass of confetti, silly string, fake snow, and numerous inflatable objects (including a highly suspect six foot penis known as Captain Pecker the Party Wrecker) plus the antics of a short, naked dancing bloke - wearing just a thong to hide his shame – managed to distract the crowd from the god-awful noise and secured the band as an absolute must-see local act.
It was during this initial incarnation that Derby based ska-punkers, Lightyear, met and fell in love with the stupidity of Grown At Home.
Time passed, as it does, and eventually cracks began to appear in the band: the bandages of silly string began to unravel; and the inflatables were burst or stolen by fans. Rob, Alex, and Dom left the band, while Nick took time out to cut down trails for tourists in the Carribean. The remains of Grown At Home realised that if the band was to survive, then it was time to inject some serious musical talent.
Bob and Chris began writing songs with Cookie, another full time pub junkie and part time guitarist. They plotted and schemed while awaiting Nick’s return, and eventually they were prepared – perhaps even eager – to get the band back to the stage.
Grown At Home reformed in October 2003 with Cookie on guitar, and Nick’s elder, wiser, more talented and more attractive brother on bass. A month or so later a chance (i.e. ‘pub’) meeting with a three piece brass section made the band complete.
The newly re-formed version is now making musical waves in the local West Midlands scene, with the GAH reputation preceeding each gig. Not only are Grown At Home known for their crazy stage antics, and sheer numbers (that’s a total of nine people on stage), they are consistently invited back to play again and again simply because of the well rounded songs they hammer out each night. Mixing a unique blend of punked up guitar riffs, funky bass lines, transcendental beats, harmonious vocal melodies and powerful feet-tapping horn blasts, you are guaranteed to enjoy this band’s set no matter which genre of music your ear drums have a preference for. |
