Press Reviews
More funk and blues from Danny and the boys that's obviously influenced by the Messengers' increasingly frequent gigs in New Orleans. In fact, at times Rhodes' vocal delivery on Welcome to the Night is such that you'd swear he'd been given a prescription by Dr. John himself.
Welcome to the Night offers a dozen new songs by Rhodes, who's probably the busiest musician in the Verde Valley over the past three years. It also features a jazz spin by Rhodes on Baby Please Don't Go that seemingly transforms the old classic into his very own.
What you don't hear from Danny Rhodes on this CD is what you'd expect. Yeah, we all know he's an absolutely amazing guitar virtuoso who will draw comparisons to the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. But you won't hear Rhodes' guitar stealing the show on this disc. Rather, this CD is a showcase for the considerable talents of the entire band.
That's good news because Rhodes' brand of swamp rock R & B is chock-full of blues, rock, country, Cajun, jazz and gospel - true musical gumbo. It's a recipie that begs for the kind of saxophone riffs you'll hear only from Sedona's Greg Aitken or the piano and organ licks of Billy Zappia. Rhodes employes the Las Vegas Horns of Eric Teralt, Steve Mayer and Mike Gonzales to add just the right touch of spice to the recording.
Vocally, Rhodes is securely in the driver's seat on this one. He's as soulful as he is playful. As always, Rhodes pays tribute to his Louisiana roots. It's who he is and it just drips off every line of every song, especially on the dear-to -his-heart O'Louisian'.
This CD gives everyone all the more reason to take in one of Rhodes' shows here in the Verde Valley. It's the classic two-fer. You get to enjoy Rhodes at his best, in front of a live audience, and then you can buy his new CD and take him home for another round or two. After all, once you start listening to Welcom to the Night, itis indeed going to be a long enjoyable night of music.
