Artist History
Formed by Drummer Shaun Gilmour and Saxophonist Scott Boni in the winter of 2002 under the name The Scoville Unit, touring the North East U.S. in the early part of 2003. But after being served with a polite notice that the moniker of "Scoville Unit" was already registered to another band, the two changed the project to the even more fitting New Soul Theory.
Gilmour and Boni form the roots of the band and with them they bring a rotating list of talented musicians which include bassists Jeff Beck (Squonk Opera) and Jake Ortego (Three Ring Binder). And Jeff Mandell on guitar.
Before forming New Soul Theory Shaun held the drum chair with the highly successful instrumental garage funk outfit The New Alcindors (2000-2002) who's debut release "Goat Fever" was applauded by critics and voted one of the top 5 releases of 2001 by radio station WYEP. He was also a member of the critically acclaimed power-pop group Happy Accidents who were picked 2 years in a row by the American Music Awards as one of the best unsigned bands in America. Gilmour also exclusively works with bands such as Galactic, Medeski Martin and Wood, Karl Denson, Mofro, Critters Buggin, Garage A Trois, North Mississippi All Stars, and Theresa Andersson providing technical and administrative support for each of their official fan-based discussion lists.
Scott Boni is a 1999 graduate of Berklee College of Music and was a member of Berklee's Art Blakey Ensemble. He was a winner of the 2001 Mellon Jazz Showcase with his eponymously named Quartet and has studied extensively with Billy Pierce (Tony Williams, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers), George Garzone (The Fringe, Joe Lovano), Andy McGhee (Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton), Phil Wilson (Woody Herman).
