    Artist History
Pure, back-to-the-basics, head-banging metal. Allston-based Shattered Existence fills the void left by the heavy metal bands of the early nineties. They satisfy Boston’s need for the music that popular culture has abandoned but true fans still crave. The band met at Berklee College of Music, in 2000, when a mutual devotion to the music of Pantera lured them to bassist Joe Boyle’s dorm room. They began jamming in November under the name Existence. The original line up included Boyle and drummer, Bryan Porter, with guitarist James Woolwine. Vocalist Dave Decoulfmacker joined the band when they answered his ad at Daddy’s Junky Music. Through a mutual friend, guitarist Bo Johnson joined the band in January 2001 and eventually eclipsed Woolwine. The group played at CBGB’s in New York City that summer, where they learned that Existence was a common band name. Inspired by Pantera, Porter coined the name Shattered Existence. After Woolwine’s departure, several incidents involving Decoulfmacker created rifts in the band. Problems escalated following a hot sauce and jelly prank and Decoulfmacker disappeared to Wisconsin with a girl. Although relieved “Sketchy Dave” was gone, they were left without a singer. The group all but disbanded until fate took over. Reunited by a desperate friend who needed to record a band for class, they enlisted the vocal talent of their roommate Gabe Wright. The song Fade, recorded at that session, can be heard on the band’s current demo. Refocused and reenergized by their new line-up, they returned to writing and practicing regularly. Despite eclectic musical backgrounds including techno, blues, and country, they share a common drive to resurrect the decade-old sound and feel of pure metal. Over a beer, Boyle secured a few Sunday night slots at O’Brien’s, in Allston, where the band quickly established a loyal following. Shattered Existence will play locally, until this summer when they will split their time between Boston and New York City, Boyle’s hometown. Shattered Existence is keeping metal alive. You can’t escape from the reckoning.
