Formed in 1999 as Narcosis Vs. Punk Amf, the band spent 4 years writing music and playing regular gigs in and around Cambridge. Punk AMF and Narcosis each have their own individual styles and although the two influences have produced some great music and high energy gigs, the bands have decided to progress individually, both now basing themselves in London.Punk AMF, now re-named as Moe Foe. MOe FOe experienced great reception at our gigs in Cambridge, which included the University Summer Ball and Battle of the Bands, we are currently in the studio writing new tracks, before our assault on London!

Joining the band competition as MOE FOE are into their first track, I’m struck by 1. the place is full, 2. the vibe is good. MOE FOE are a cool bunch of characters. Visually they’re a right mish-mash; two rappers, a scratch DJ, bongo player, bassist, guitarist and some other dudes adding to this experimental hip hop influenced feel good music. It’s not just hip hop though - these are people who clearly like their cross-over music and between them have probably spent as much time going to clubs as they have watching bands. They’re into it and so are their crowd who are nodding their heads, pleased to be part of the experience. To a background of squelches, sci-fi sound effects, atmospherics and some half-decent lighting they knock out some top choons with some sound, cheeky rapping from the jokers in the pack. It’s experimental, a little bit rough round the edges and interesting to watch. Above all it’s entertaining and their interestingly titled track ‘Suck My Mutha F****n’ dick’ is unlikely to be forgotten in a hurry… MOE FOE Win Well I couldn’t call this one at all. When I saw MOE FOE I thought it was going to take a bloody good band to beat this lot – and while Duffy are my favourite band that I’ve seen in this competition, they were too much like other bands to gain any points in the innovation and originality department. In fact they came last and MOE FOE won, but I reckon that Miss Black America can count themselves unlucky losing out by two points. In another heat they may have easily won through. Andy Dakin Review of The Cambridge Band Competition Heat 2 entered Thu, 15 Mar by Dan Arber JFV You know, sometimes introductions are simply not neccesary. After receiving the obligatory "MOE FOE-yeah!" from another irritating cable TV stalwart,it was time to cut to the hit. One DJ and two MCs backed up by block party drums and percussion,Summer of Sam guitar chops, bass vibrations and keys transmitted straight from the mothership - this crew were on it. Beats, rhymes, samples, riffs and scratching executed with style, wit and grace, this wasn't the the best shit that I've seen in this competition - scratch that - this was the best shit that I've seen in a long, long time. Believe it. MOE FOE put me in mind of various sounds from The Brotherhood and Asian Dub Foundation through to Renegade Soundwave. All of these and more while retaining their own distinct style. The mix was wild style, eclectic, fast, furious and relentless. They got the Funk. They got the Technology. Review by Alex Millar: Adhoc :MOE FOE Since the second heat of the Cambridge Band Competition I have received numerous reviews from our readers singing the praises of the winners of said heat: MOE FOE. So when I heard that they were playing a gig supporting Calling Orson, another acclaimed local band, I decided it may well be worth my while popping along for a listen. Thank god I did. Even though they had approximately five seconds to set up and sound-check, they were confident, tight and energetic, If a little weak on the stage-show side of things. In spite of a soundman who seemed intent on displaying his dislike for well-constructed original music through an almost painful lack of volume, they held it together, played a blinding set and left the stage with a very much larger fanbase than before. Plus perhaps the odd smug grin as certain members of the audience picked their jaws up from the floor. The headline band for the night; Calling Orson, while obviously all talented musicians, are really not meant to be a live band and certainly not a Boat Race band. They have a time and a place, ie, on a well mastered, clean-sounding CD or possibly at a college May Ball. Certainly not after one of the most innovative and fresh bands I’ve heard in Cambridge. I’m sorry boys, but I think in this case you just didn’t quite match up in the originality stakes. Having said that, my only real problem with this gig was the running order. While both Calling Orson and MOE FOEhad a similar, funky edge to their sound, there was just something missing from Calling Orson’s set after the harder, dancier stuff from MOE FOE. To be honest, live hip hop is a very difficult thing to do well. And as a relatively new band MOE FOE do it very well indeed. Give them time to perfect existing stuff and produce a few more tracks and I don’t doubt that this lot will go far. I only hope that the judges on April 4th can see past the fuzzy edges and recognise raw talent when they see it. You never know, it might even go a little way towards correcting the travesty that was last year’s decision... Alex Millar 3rd place, MOE FOE had the style, the originality, and were the most contemporary. As I've said before I don't like rap, I especially don't like white English middleclass rap. But these guys are exeptionally talented and I can see them going a long way. Just because I don't like a style of music doesn't mean it's no good. They are superb -well done. By the way Pimping IS easy - it's the whoring that's hard.
