Artist History
Perhaps "the band too big for Sioux Lookout, Ontario" isn't the best sales pitch of the decade, but in the case of Winnipeg's Katelyn, it certainly fits.
Formed in a basement in the tiny Northern Ontario town, the band (which was founded by bassist Bill Carroll and drummer Pat Haskins) was soon dishing out inspired riffs and rocking out in any bar in the rural Canadian Shield that would have them: unfortunately, that didn't amount to many, given the area's sparse populations and generally low appreciation for the kind of NOFX and Propagandhi-inspired tunes that the band held dear.
Finally, in the summer of 2001, Haskins and Carroll decided it was time to strike out for the big city... or, at least, Winnipeg. Together with the band’s original guitarist, they made the move to Manitoba, in the hopes of discovering somewhere to play.
Things began to change for the band rather quickly: when the original guitarist left in the summer of 2002, the band's old Sioux Lookout cohort Jamie Monck (who had moonlighted with the band for a period in 2000) joined full-time, and almost instantly became an integral part of the band's songwriting. Touting a different guitar style than his predecessor, Monck's arrival signaled a new beginning: Katelyn threw out all of their old tunes and started working on a totally new set.
By early 2003, Katelyn had become one of Winnipeg's most regularly performing bands, honing its performances by trying to keep up a pace of three or four shows a month. As the band discovered the beginnings of its own fan following, they started to take their music more seriously. They honed their sound, pushing for tightness and consistency; they joined the Manitoba Audio Recording Industry Association; they began construction on their new website.
And of course, they started to get their tunes onto record. Their debut EP, "Dodge This," was recorded with veteran Winnipeg producer Mark Chaplin at his Plaza Room studios. Building off of the trio's tight friendship... Monck credits the fact that the three have known each other longer than anyone for being the reason they never fight... the disc aims to act as an introduction to a band that plans to stick around for the long haul.
