Artist description
Boutros Boutros is by no means a band that could be accused of rehashing a tried and tested formula. Despite retaining a defining feel to all their recordings, their catalogue is diverse - ranging from all-out rock, to urban dance, to an almost C&W feel in some tracks. The sound is definitely lo-fi, due in part to their musical style and also to their recording techniques, which are yet to progress beyond an eight-track in a damp cellar in Gravesend.
Live, Boutros Boutros manage to mix and mingle their various styles into a coherent and formidable show. In the main it is Nasrawi taking the lead, prowling the stage like a man with a purpose, whilst being backed by the omnipresent Hickmott guitar and behind them, Windeyer adds the samples and scratches to the brew. This is all liable to frequent change however, with lead vocal duties switching between Nasrawi and Hickmott throughout any given set. The live show has without doubt a harder, more intense edge to it than the recordings, with the heavier beats providing a substantial backdrop for the live guitars and vocals. |

Artist History
Hailing from West London and formed in late '98, Boutros Boutros are Tariq al-Nasrawi (24), Robert Windeyer (26) and Adrian Hickmott (759). The band arose out of the ashes of one-time Brit-pop band, Couch, in which Tariq and Adrian were both members. Disillusioned with the old band's sound, the two friends started writing and recording new material, more akin to their current musical tastes. Seeking to give their new direction another dimension, they relented to the frequent murmurings of bedroom DJ and ex techno-spod Windeyer, who rarely missed an opportunity to express an interest (i.e. drunkenly beg) to get together and make music with them. Eventually Windeyer was invited to come along to see if he could add anything to the tracks that they'd already worked on, the blend seemed to work and the duo became a trio.
The first track recorded as a band was Filthy Pig, the product of a long night of liver abuse and frenetic chattering. A quirky number that lays superhero lyrics and funky guitar over a sliced up and butchered early Freddy Fresh 12". The mixture of rough-edged energy, stupidity and cheekiness that characterises the track felt like a good starting point from which to move forward.
The name of the band took some time longer to materialise. With two thirds of the trio being raised in the Middle East and still retaining a strong connection with the area they recorded under the working title of The Arabs. After months of indecision over a 'better' alternative that still retained the Arabic connection, the name Boutros Boutros was agreed upon thanks to a carefully balanced mixture of alcohol and desperation.
