Artist History
Matt and Tom met at Unitarian-Universalist youth conferences in 1999. At the time, Matt had just begun to write solo acoustic songs, and Tom was forming his high school rock band Decoy. They began collaborating the next year, while separately becoming staples at UU youth conference talent shows and the Starlight teen open mic sponsored by the Chicago Old Town School of Folk Music.
After both being accepted to Oberlin College in the winter of 2001, they decided to collaborate seriously and eventually form a band at college. Over the summer of 2002, Tom and Matt worked to expand their catalogue, writing back up parts to each of their songs, and finding their sound.
After arriving at Oberlin, Tom and Matt worked the open mic and talent show scene, searching, ultimately in vain, for additional artists to join the band. Un-phased, they continued to write folk songs, rock songs, and everything in between.
INTO THE BREACH was recorded in January of 2003 over the Oberlin winter term. Yes, they got school credit for recording their debut album. Rock.
This past spring, Tom and Matt headlined their first two full shows. They played a mellow acoustic set at Oberlin Music Café on April 9, and a high-energy electric/acoustic gig at the Cat in the Cream on April 21. Tom and Matt also played a few songs at the Oberlin Peace and Action League benefit concert, as well as opened for the Buzz Poets at a free outdoor show in the middle of campus.
They are very excited about playing some gigs at home in Chicago this summer, presenting their hard work over the last year at Unitarian Universalist events in Boston and Buffalo, and pursuing on and off-campus gigs at Oberlin next fall.
