Artist History
The Sungazers play an eclectic mix of music that could perhaps best be described as Black Crowes meets Pink Floyd meets Radiohead funky blues folk-punkcore prog rockabilly. The band has roots reaching all the way back to the spring of 1996 when Jordan and Shaft decided to start a band. After months of songwriting, recruiting, and practicing, the four-piece Water emerged in 1997. The band played for various Christian clubs, churches, youth groups, and low key festivals. In the summer of 1999, Jordan's brother Sean was added to the roster bringing a fuller sound with his lead guitar. The band was developing a unique sound and things were going good for the band. Then, at the end of 1999, the bass player decided to call it quits. This was a tough blow for the band, and they had trouble deciding on a replacement. They went six months without playing a show and then the drummer announced that he would be leaving town. On May 19, 2000, Water played its “fade to glory” show, for which all the original members returned. A new band began forming in the spring of 2001 featuring Jordan, Shaft, and Sean. The band picked up a new drummer and a bass player for a show at a local battle of the bands and the Sungazers were born. The band did a couple of shows and recorded a single, "My Brother", but had a hard time finding a steady bass player until Barr sat in for a show at 221 Main Street in the fall of 2001 and stuck around. Drummers were harder to come by; the Sungazers used fill-in drummers sometimes and even did two shows without one, but that changed on New Year's Eve 2002 when Matt joined the band for a show at Evansville's First Night. Shortly thereafter the band recorded a four-song demo EP and the rest, as they say, is history.
All of the members of the band are Christians, but the goal of the band is to write songs informed by a Christian worldview -- not necessarily to write so-called "Christian music". |
