Artist description
10th March 2003
Taking their name from an obscure ancient Latvian god of forests,Meza Virs are a band from Singapore who play a diverse blend of melodic/symphonic black, death, gothic and doom metal. Harsh, apocalyptic vocals scream lyrics of bleak sorrow and despair, providing a stark contrast to the alluringly beautifuly female melodies, both set against a dark backdrop of brutal, yet melodic instrumention.
Meza Virs was formed in mid-2002 when guitarists Cedric & Samuel came together with the intention of doing a black metal project band. An initial lineup was put together, but this soon fell apart and Ced and Sam were back at square one. Upon deciding to take the music in a more melodic and epic direction, vocalist Jasmine and keyboardist Ying were recruited and the core of the band was formed.
The fledgling band began writing and demo-ing new material, with Samuel and Cedric handling all guitar, bass and drum duties. The first recorded output of this lineup was "Tragic Vendetta". With its blend of grinding heaviness and beautiful melodic parts, the song began to make its rounds in the local metal scene, drawing comparisions with bands like Dimmu Borgir and At the Gates. The name of the band was slowly growing, but it was still a studio-only outfit working on an EP. This would soon change..
As the year 2003 came around, the decision was made to put together a full, permanant lineup of the band in order to play live shows. Drummer Tjinn and guitarist Johnny thus entered the Meza Virs lineup, with a mutual friend Ben helping out on bass at first. Auditioning for an opening slot for the album launch gig of the mighty Impiety, the band managed to land a spot and began rehearsing in earnest for the gig.
Around the same time, the opportunity presented itself for us to make a promo video for "Tragic Vendetta". Andrew,a friend of Cedric's and a film student wanted to shoot a music video and we jumped at the chance. The resulting video was a dark look at the lyrics and story behind the song, while at the same time showing off the band's live act and being the first music video for a metal band in Singapore.
The 1st of March 2003 marked Meza Virs' maiden live performance opening for Impiety at Jams The Club, the response was good and cemented the band's place in the local metal scene for some time to come.
Meza Virs are now currently in the process of finishing up their EP,entitled "Vida Sacrificium Meum Est",with a tentative mid 2003 release date. The band is also seeking a record/distro deal for the EP,as well as more opportunities to perform live.
