Artist description
With a name like MuddyKing on the marquee, you might expect to see an old bluesman on stage. But Muddy’s “old soul” paired with seasoned road experience makes for an interesting show.
The band consists of Muddy King on guitar, organ and vocals, with L.Richard Albright, a.k.a. “Boom Boom,” on bass and backing vocals. On drums is Philip Johnson.
Muddy and Rich have developed a Lennon/McCartney sensibility with their song writing, each harmony complementing the other’s style. In the trio format every note, whether vocal or instrumental, makes all the difference. The sound is hard to label, always keeping one foot in the blues, but stretching out to jazz, reggae and even 60s British invasion pop. Some call the mix good ole Southern Rock.
MuddyKing’s fans can expect a great show. From Muddy’s duck walk and solos played behind his head to flaming guitars, fans have grown accustomed to exciting live performances. Muddy even sparkles organ into the mix while still playing his guitar. But shows are never planned. They just happen. And that’s what makes them magical. MuddyKing won big at the 2002 Birmingham Area Music Awards (BAMAs), taking home top honors for “Best Male Vocalist” and “Best Blues,” which is ironic since that’s not really what the band is all about.
Their first album, Bogalusa, was produced at MixMasters Studios in Cullman and released in May 2000. Singles from the album, including “A Woman,” “Stop Breakin’ Down,” “Excuse Me,” “Sweet Freedom” and “Dancin’ Shoes” have received national, international and Internet radio airplay. MuddyKing is currently in the studio working on a follow up album, which is scheduled for a spring/summer 2003 release.

“Close your eyes during this album and you can picture a late night concert at a seedy, smoke-filled bar just off Beale Street in Memphis.”
Birmingham Post-Herald
“This project is a valedictory study in the blues and the metamorphism that is taking place in popular culture’s acceptance of broiling, good time music.”
Magic City Blues News
“Just when I thought the days of the great southern rockin' blues bands had all but vanished. If that's your bag (and it is mine) then you need a fix of MuddyKing.”
