Artist History
After several years of playing guitar in cover bands, Blues jams, and supporting other musical visions, Doteen grew tired and frustrated. Besides his "Rock" influences, he also had a love for The Gypsy Kings, The Pogues and Classical music. Needless to say, this Celtic-rock-pop- sound that he was carving sort of scared people away..."How can you mix all these together man?" But being inspired and enamored by so many different musical expressions, he just couldn't help it...the music was naturally taking form. Doteen also knew he did not fit in with the "musicians" he was encountering...there seemed to be too much self-regard and "Mr. Rock" syndrome attached to the music. Doteen wanted self-effacing humor, irony, honesty and friendship combined with an almost child-like approach to songwriting. In other words, let the music be the focus. So, rather than let these obstacles overwhelm him, Doteen gradually learned to happily accept being a musical exile and a misfit artist. His music was not exactly Blues, Heavy Metal, Punk, Rock, whatever...it was, however, sprinkled and splattered with all of sorts of colors and moods then twisted and whirled into one sound. Fed up of trying to find his "freedom galaxy soul brother band mates", Doteen bought himself a 4 track recorder in 1994 and began to write his own songs and lyrics. Writing and recording would become his refuge, a place where he felt confident and free to scream and roar. Doteen has played numerous songwriter spotlights, jammed on downtown streets, played and sang for the homeless, entertained the mentally ill, school kids and stray dogs...his audience is as diverse as his music. In 1996, and many cigarettes later, Doteen recorded his first eponymous cd, "Doteen", and also had a couple of songs in frequent rotation on local Rock stations in Albuquerque, New Mexico-1996 (107.9 The Edge) and in Biloxi, Mississippi 2001-2002. (WQRZ 92.5) In July of 2000, Doteen won Songwriter's Monthly best lyrics contest for his song "Laughing at the Sun" and in 2003 released a new cd "Carve Me A Moon", which continues its voyage on the cosmic freeway to childhood innocence, passion and infinity. |
