Artist History
Imagine James Brown jammin‘ with Led Zeppelin...that‘s Perk..."The Future of Rock 'n Soul!” Music Connection Magazine called this Los Angeles performer “a young funk rock artist who sings as if his very life depends on it." In 2002, Perk locked himself in a 7 x 9 room, and opened the door to his vision of a super-charged entertainment icon.
Perk is currently promoting the release of his self-titled debut album - 10 original songs that blend funky rhythms, rock guitar, and soaring vocals. Lyrically, he's positive and inspirational with a creatively simplistic style. Actively performing in L.A.‘s top clubs has created a swell of “party people” who love the fun and excitement of a Perk show. His sidekick, Boogie, is a wicked guitar player who's best described as Chuck Berry meets Eddie Van Halen. Together, these "soul brothers" exude a dynamic chemistry that's easy to see, and hard to resist. With creative marketing and street teams, their fan base has extended to sixteen states, fourteen countries, and counting. Perk will be spending the summer rockin’ the west coast and promoting his signature single, “It‘s Out There.” Most exciting, however, is the upcoming fall tour of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapters across the nation. After all, it was SAE that taught him the true meaning of "party!"
Growing up in North Carolina, John “Perk” Perkinson never played an instrument, sang in a choir, or listened to music beyond the car radio. Sports were the driving force in his youth, and his time was spent racing BMX events, scoring goals in soccer, and stroking the “butterfly” on swim teams. On a fateful day while attending N.C. State University, Perk was overheard hitting the incredibly high notes of an Iron Maiden song. He soon found himself fronting a heavy metal cover band called Nacho Mama. Perk instantly fell in love with performing for audiences, and subsequently changed his major to Mass Communications. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree, he enrolled in the prestigious guitar program at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. The year long program gave him the tools to compose and perform the newly discovered music inside. After experiencing the politics and mayhem of a few bands, he began carving his way down the path of the solo artist. Along the way, Perk has been seen internationally as a model, and studied at Piero Dusa Acting Conservatory in Santa Monica.
Perk is focused and determined. His goal is to "brand" himself as the top funk rock singer in the world. He’s doing this by marketing his uniquely defined sound and image to music lovers searching for fun, inspirational entertainment. As Rock City News says, “You wanna rock? You wanna party? Perk is your man!”

Press Reviews
Music Connection Magazine Review / Anne O'neary / 6-9-03
MATERIAL: Perk is significantly R&B, with a touch of unpretentious rock and rap thrown in. With grooving rock melodies, the music creates a house party atmosphere. And though Perk doesn't craft any new techniques, his songs are entertaining and upbeat.
All of the compostitions are appealing with boogie-bass sounds and rocking chords encompassing vocals that correspond to both genres. The lyrics are catchy and the melodies memorable enough to make them unforgettable at a first-time hearing.
MUSICIANSHIP: On guitar, Boogie is a standout player with lead licks that singe the air and boost the songs performance levels. Backing him is a powerhouse rhythm section, Tony and Alex, whose tight meters thrust straightforward patterns. Perk is a skillful frontman who exhibits moments of luster with smooth and lusty vocals that shout for attention.
PERFORMANCE: Bouncing about the stage and gyrating his body to the beats, Perk continually stimulated the crowd with his vigorous attitude and outright zest. Boogie followed Perk's eagerness and even got the crowd to join in with the fun. In fact, a large portion of the audience chanted along with Perk's songs. The only break between tunes was when Perk free merchandise, including CDs and t-shirts.
SUMMARY: Perk is a young funk-rock artist who sings as if his very life depends on it. Though some may think the music sounds dated, Perk would be well advised to find a strong indie label that is not afraid to take a chance. His songs are radio-ready and obviously appeal to a broad audience consisting of kids and their parents alike. |
