Scott Reilly and Murray Devey were cruising down the QEW one fine winter afternoon when the light bulb started to flicker. They were listening to the radio, sipping some soda, and bobbing their heads to the tunes, and yet, despite all of the commotion, something wasn’t right. The music just didn’t quite hit the spot, the pop was flat, and a couple of old-timers were giving them funny looks in the car next door. So in the midst of such weariness, they got talking.
Punk Rock had always been a significant part of their lives, be it going to the shows around town, the yearly visits to the warped tour, or futile attempts to start something they could call their own. Scott had been playing guitar for years and made an honest attempt to relieve his suppressed energy in a local band called Pokerface, but with little success. Murray hadn’t had the opportunity to play an instrument in a band, but picked up the bass now and again. They both didn’t know what they were after, but decided that they would try to put something together that would represent their frustrations, energy, and love for good music. And so began the search for the most talented, multi-faceted, attention-defected, half-baked band members this side of the Milky Way…
Brad Sumac was well known throughout the city as a Punk Rock legend. Having played guitar in the band Gym Class Joke earned Brad a solid reputation as one of the Grand Masters of punk in the city, and he proved it any day of the week by wailing out a perfect solo, or one of the classic KISS songs. When it came to drinking beers, Brad could hold his own. Scott and Murray were a little reluctant to challenge such a pro to a night on the town, but they knew business was business and it had to be done. They called Brad up and, (after a few) Scott and Murray proposed the great endeavor. Brad agreed to the new project.
The majority of the band had been decided, but the search for a tight, talented drummer became the next priority. Ryan Doucette was a drum line member of the Burlington Teen Tour Band, an internationally acclaimed marching band, and had been trained in rudimental percussion through many hours of practice and weekly lessons. He had marched throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, and helped the drum line win many awards.

In high school, he played the drum set in Concert and Jazz Ensembles, and continued to look for the right people to start up a band. After being referred to the band by a friend, Nick Smyth, Ryan was introduced to Scott, Murray and Brad one rainy evening at the Music Gym, a local rehearsal space and recording studio. Immediately, all four hit it off and began to work on writing their first song. The chemistry clicked, the sound was right, and the solid base for the Spicoli’s was solidified.
Throughout the long months ahead, the band continued to practice, write music and lounge around the pool in Ryan’s backyard searching for inspiration. They had no singer, but continued to establish their sound and try out different approaches to writing music. After many hardships, the band moved on and continued to write and search for a singer.
Finally they met their match. Mike Eastick came onboard in the beginning of the winter 2001; he currently sang and played guitar for another long time local band Slurpy Mundae. In Late February of 2001 the band recorded their first four-song demo at Escarpment Sound in Acton, Ontario. Using the four songs recorded at Escarpment Sound, the band entered the Ernie Ball Strings online Battle of the Bands based out of California. They won the contest and appeared at The Warped Tour on Aug 11th 2001 at the Skydome. Mike continued to play with the Spicoli’s as long as he could, but in the Summer of 2002, Slurpy Mundae signed to a major record deal with Atlantic Recordings U.S.A.
Since then, the band has stormed onto the local scene with their talented new singer Brandon Pascoa. Brandon had played in many bands before his initiation into the Spicoli’s, and was connected to the band through Ryan as they played little league baseball together as kids. The Spicoli’s, with the leadership of their new singer, have made their presence known by playing local shows at Big Buck’s Mountain Lodge in Burlington, the YMCA Burlington, Shot n’ Stein Bar (formerly the Pool Hall), the Burlington Music Center, the Trasheteria in Guelph, as well as other venues around Ontario including the Reverb in Toronto. The Spicoli’s are currently #1 in a huge battle of the band contest out of Guelph; details can be found at www.bandwars.ca.
Recently, the band was awarded the Professional Demo Award from Factor. The bands is currently relentlessly rehearsing for upcoming shows, and are putting the final touches on their first independent full-length LP, “Blood, Sweat, and Beers” which is slated for release in Spring 2003.
