Artist History
I bet you all didn’t know this but the hurtu story is pretty long. One could say that hurtu didn’t really start until the fall of 2002, but if you ask me, chris mceneaney, the founder of this band and a genius, that’s just bullshit. If you ask me, and you know I’m right, cos I was fucking there!, it started February 2000. That was it midwinter break for Bernards township public schools, and on this particular one matt brady bought a guitar, an ibanez that tried to look like a fender. Well I had a drum set and there was the formation of the band, I forgot our name and we got nothing done… at all, I don’t even remember our name. Since brady’s a dick he decided I couldn’t be the drummer anymore, but we still couldn’t find one and I bought a bass. Well our line-up was weird like alec signorino, tommy holden, albert martini were all sort of in but we weren’t sure. Brady was a busy boy and we couldn’t practice with him much, so things changed, that era remained unproductive anyway, but we did have our first song, “the tower air saga” which was unlistenable at the time, but later became a noise-novelty masterpiece. Doug chee and bo liu joined the band officially, with tommy, albert , and my brother aidan sort of just floating in and out. Sadly, though bo and doug were really just into metallica covers at the time, so we got little done except for “the mike pitera song” which eventually became “smokey bear plays with matches” in the future. Well they got busy too and we (by we I mean I) decided to kick them out, but never told them, and they had other shit to do anyway so they just thought the band broke up. Funny, isn’t it? Well then this was may 2001 and I hated metallica so then a band was really formed. This band was the first with a consisten name, xyster. And if you think the name was consisten, so was the line up: me, tommy, aidan, Adrian ricelli, and jingcheng xu the first day, but seriously! It’s jingcheng. Oh I miss that boy. Well it was with this line up we made some of our classics including “creep st.”, “smokey bear plays with matches” “x-ray spies” and the lost classics “radio boy”, “the girl I saw” and the re-done “tower air saga” luckily, these classic s are available on shabazz! Too or will be soon. Also we had a guest appearance with albert martini where all the songs of this era were recorded and albert-penned “randy”, “randy(take 2)” and “erotic infomercial” albert also appears on “the girl I saw” from that day. Everything from that wonderful day is/will be on shabazz! Too. So then it was winter 2002 and our patience had left for tommy and he was kicked out. It was just me, aidan, and Adrian for a while, then sam deutsch joined. We really didn’t do much, but did right “virulent” which was the focus of the 2 shows we played then, still out only shows to date (today is 4/5/03) ans well as being joined by Edmund kozack on a jam our second show. That summer aidan and I went to summer music programs and recorded as the popes (which we kept until we found out about the pogues side-project) and recorded shabazz! Which featured “x-ray spies” and instrumental version of “virulent”, and covers of “beat on the brat” and “transmission” with the help of mr. jeff ziga, and steph. Also we played with chronic insurgence, but would much rather not talk about it.Then “crop circles” and a bunch of great songs by Adrian were made and our name was changed to hurtu.. “Crop circles” is now a hurtu classic, the other songs are adrian’s and he with my help will record and release them eventually. Now other shit… Adrian quit, but we got a lot better and have too many songs and we’re finally playng a show may 9. that’s it. - chris mceneaney |
